Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Old Haberdashers II on Sat 18 Jun 2011 at 1pm
Match was Abandoned Rained off
Match report
Berkhamsted III’s vs Old Haberdashers II 18th June 2011
It had been raining, forecast was not great, various pitch inspections revealed it was wet but there were drying conditions. Everyone turned up, Puds said NO, Charlie said yes, the oppo were very keen. It was too damp at 1pm, start was delayed, controversy rained before the stand-off at the Berko-K-Coral was avoided by Puds deciding discretion was the better part of valour and opted to go to the local watering hole. It continued to dry, everyone was keen to play so we started late with an agreement to play a 90 over game. The toss was lost and we were put in. The great Toddmeister turned up to watch and was press ganged into a drop of umpiring.
Almost within a lightning flash and a deluge of wickets we were 3 down for 7. Duds umbrellared a good one into slips, Ben missed a straight one taking his off stump and Tim wellied one back to the bowler who would have been very pleased not to drop a low hard one off his boots. Arjun and Ed steadied the ship through troubled waters and several storms. One of which reduced us by a couple of overs. After a torrent of good shots AJ was caught and Ian entered the maelstrom. After some decent lashes, the start of the penultimate shower did for Ed, playing over a good leg stump yorker for a lush 40. Gareth looked good until his helmet misted and he played across a straight one. Will came out to smash a few fours and slip over before the heavens gushed. Tea was taken with Ian hailed on 35 not out and our score a more respectable 130 for 6 off 36 overs.
A fine tea ruined by the rain drumming on the windows and marquee. Even the most glass-half-full optimists had to realise the good fortune well had overflowed too much. Now actually having Puddles on the pitch was enough to precipitate the decision to call it a day. Technically the game doesn’t count but entered our innings such as it was into club stats. If the top three want their innings blotted out ….
