Chipperfield/Clarendon v Berkhamsted Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 02 Aug 2009 at 13:00
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
Chipperfield Clarendon won the toss, elected to bat. A breezy start from the openers, kindled by some Berkhamsted bowling that was too short early on, saw the hosts off to a positive start. The introduction of Mark Herring around the 15th over mark heralded a stifled run rate and the ultimate removal of the danger man Wise. With Ian Dent into the attack, the run rate was further curbed by some excellent tandem bowling between Mark Herring and Denty. An overall decent bowling/fielding performance limited the hosts to 178 for 6 from their 45.
Berkhamsted openers Doug Foster and Dave Sherjan built a steady 50 for the first wicket before Foster fell to a quick piece of glovework by the overseas keeper. A good stay at the crease saw Sherjan move onto 61 before disappointingly holing out to deep midwicket. 111 for 4 - Berkhamsted poised. An important partnership between Peter Dudley and Ben Langley was unluckily ended thanks to the direct hit run out of Langley. Still needing 33 for a well crafted victory, Peter Dudley's crucial contribution finished with Huw Barnett following suit soon after. Jez O'Neil was then undone by the pace of Durrant for 0 leaving the nail bitten sidelines of the truckers in further disarray. 20 runs to win, 2 wickets left, 5 overs remaining. Enter Paul Langley. With instructions to "bat sensibly" from the skipper, Pup dismantled a Chipperfield Clarendon attack hunting an upset, with an agressive slash over point off his fourth delivery for a boundary and then finishing the match with a huge straight six over mid on. Special mention to Ian Dent who batted with maturity despite not being able to read the score. Well done chaps, promotion hopes still well alive.
