Berkhamsted Cricket Club 4th XI v Chorleywood IV on Sat 25 Jul 2009 at 1:30
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 155 runs
Match report
Chorleywood turned up with a side consisting of 2 adults and 9 colts - some of which were obviously U13 - and you wondered where the match was going to go. Still one of the adults was Simon Dare, with 9,000 runs, easily the highest run scorer at CCC. Nothing to be taken for granted.
The skipper won the toss and decided to bat, with himself and Max Jones making a steady 5 an over start. Max unfurled some lovely shots, especially the pull shot and looks every inch a quality cricketer to come. Unfortunately, he got a little overexcited at a good pull shot against a newly changed bowler and tried again the following ball, which was a little more pitched up. Result: ball in the air to one of the only adults. I good knock.
The skipper was bowled trying to escalate the rate a bit, so it was left to Steve Wale and Puds to work on the scoring, ticking it along at a good rate. Both got their 50s in good time and with the word that we wanted a declaration after 43 overs, a few late wickets went, including Peps muttering as usual as he came off after an LBW decision.
In reply, David 'Didi' Westley and Max opened the bowling with beautiful spells, Didi swinging it prodigiously and Max extracting good bounce from the ridge at the top end of the pitch. The danger man was removed when Simon Dare desperately dug out an excellent in-swinging yorker from Didi only to helplessly watch it trickle onto the stumps and a bail just about fall off. Out for a duck. From then on, the wickets fell regularly, including a particularly suicidal run out to Stevie W at extra cover (I say suicidal, he actually sacrificed his partner!). The 5th wicket partnership held us up a bit but that was sorted when the other adult player decided that a quick single was in order - to Steve again at mid wicket - which wasn't. Ollie and Romit (I sense a good idea for a cartoon pairing there: "cracking cheese Romit") then finished it all off in quick order - including a marvellous 'falling over' stumping by Jack Graham of the adult player who was hitting Ollie big and straight - and a massive 155 run win was under our belt.
