Redbourn IV v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 09 Jun 2018 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
On an easy paced pitch Berko won the toss and opted to have a bat. The skipper went early for 15 to a smart slip catch and Oscar carried on from last week with growing confidence before missing a straight one. Pete was struggling to get the ball away and a mix up ended in a run out as he tried to up the pace. Steve then fell just before drinks and 3 wickets had gone down for 5 runs. Jacob & Simsy didn't last long after the break but a quick flurry from Mark looked like it would get Berko back on track until Mark walked across his stumps to be bowled round his legs (he does like an unusual dismissal). John came and went before Ollie followed instructions in keeping Brownie company. Phil was easing through the gears with his signature cover drive but after pulling a calf started to unleash his full range of shots. The pair put on 76 for the 9th wicket to give the score respectability after being 105/8.
The slowest attack ever seen in the history of cricket took the field. Ollie grubbed the oppo skipper early and John snaffled a couple, one a very good low down catch from Simsy. At 49/3 at drinks, Redbourn decided to put their foot down and first ball after drinks a fearsome straight drive was dropped by Mark but deflected onto the stumps with the batsman stranded. Unfortunately the umpire had his back turned in self defence and Berko then stopped doing the basics of bowling straight. Jake picked up a couple of wickets but the lack of bowling options gave Redbourn hope and a 13 year old on debut showed maturity to reach an undefeated 61.
Berko had their chances and on another day one or two of the difficult chances would have stuck but in the end the "Development XI" were out developed by some promising youngsters.
