Redbourn v Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 13A on Fri 19 May 2017 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost 3 Wickets

Match report A big game away against form team Redbourn. Not the best start as we were playing on their alternative ground, the location of we only discovered on arrival, well done to parents for still getting the boys there for the 18.00 start.

Captain Hubbard won the toss and chose to bat on a decent looking wicket. We had the best possible start with Todd dispatching the first ball for six and then proceeding to score at a good pace with opening partner Ben Oldham. The in form Doe took over when Ben was caught out and after a cautious start completed another run a ball 30. Todd fell just short of his own retirement and after a couple of quick wickets as we tried to accelerate, Tom Alexander took over playing with purpose to take the score to a creditable 121 after 20 overs.

Redbourn signalled their intent with some good judgement batting against our opening bowlers, Pemberton took out 1 opener and combined with keeper Tom Alexander to run out the number 3 but Redbourn remained calm and scored at a good pace keeping up with the required rate for the first 10 overs. Doe and Ben Oldham took over bowling with spin at both ends and produced a couple of back to back maidens with Ben taking a couple of wickets too, this put us in the driving seat, the boys sensed victory and kept up the energy in the field. Unfortunately Redbourn had a big hitter that we were unable to remove and this combined with leaking some runs in the field gave them a chance with 14 needed off the last over. The big fella knew he had to swing and hit 13 off 3 balls leaving the scores tied but then had to retire, Mackay held
his nerve to bowl 2 dots, 1 with a run out, but the last ball slid down the leg side allowing Redbourn to scramble the one bye they needed.

The boys were gutted but this was a terrific game of cricket and they were on top of a very decent team for large parts of this match. They can reflect on a few too many extras in the field, over 30 compared to Redbourn's 9, that, if saved, would have added the extra scoreboard pressure that would have probably cracked them. Every reason to look forward to the return fixture with optimism though, as they say don't get mad, get even!

MOM: Charlie Doe for all round performance
