Harpenden V v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 30 Jul 2016 at 1pm - 80 overs (42/38)
Match was Drawn
Match report
Battle of the top teams with one promotion place available. This was going to be crucial. The first thing to get right is the toss - vital to chase and keep the winning chances in our own hands.
We lost it. Harpenden opted to bat second.
Next priority is to get a good score up quickly and pressure them. After losing a couple of quick ones in Matt and Dave, Dan Angel and Nick set about the bowling and hit them well on a comparatively small ground. Boundaries were raining and the score was 136-2 after 21 overs.
Then they got out, after excellent 60s knocks from both of them, and the middle order couldn't follow up. In fact, the run rate ground down and batsmen struggled. It needed a bit of chasing around for singles by the lower order to get a score of 187 up in the 39th over. It was telling that other than Dan and Nick's 60s no-one else got into double figures.
We knew we had to press hard for the win in the field and Callum and George opened well. Dan L snaffled a good low keeping chance off George. Good catching kept the pressure on them - highlights being a stunning c&b by Martin, a low catch at extra cover by the skipper which he actually dropped but rolled to nestle between thigh and calf and a tidy long off catch by DK.
They were under pressure at around 100-5 and the response: shut up shop. Being 33 points ahead, you could see the logic of preserving points but it was frustrating to see and we pushed and pushed with different bowlers.
They ended on 127-7 from their 41 overs - mostly thanks to a few lusty blows at the end to give a tad of respectability to the score to them. We ended on 17 points to their 7, so a moral victory of sorts. Now if only that toss had been won.....
