Southgate Adelaide III v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 09 Jul 2016 at 1pm - 80 overs (42/38)
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
We were spoilt to be on the S Adelaide main pitch - their 3rds get this privilege once a year and, as we were to find out, it was a belter of a batting wicket with a big outfield - the only issue being that it had been used recently with a few resulting odd bounces off old divots.
SA won the toss and opted to bat and their first few batsmen were strong and correct. We didn't quite get our bowling right and they were off to a fast start.
Catches were going down too. Several chances came and went of varying difficulty and the danger was of us losing our heads as throws pinged in with desperate backing up.
Introducing Callum was the turning point, with good fast bowling slowing things down and when SA lost two quick wickets we suddenly were through to give us a chance. Charlie bowled well, too, in his second spell and ended with a deserved 5-fer, with Harry taking a couple too and the target was 197 to win - nowhere near as bad as it could have been.
Dave and Matt did the job of batting with discipline while hitting the bad ball hard and brought up a century opening partnership in good time - only broken by a silly run out of Matt. From there Nick took over with controlled hitting and the target was rapidly being reeled in. Dan and Stephen, too, hit well and we ended up with 4.3 overs to spare in getting the runs and Nick having time to bring up his 50 to go with Dave's earlier one.
