Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Watford Town III on Sat 19 Jul 2014 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
A deluge the night before plus an awful forecast for the afternoon made it very doubtful for the game, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the wicket was damp but capable of getting dry over time in the morning. Just had to rely on the forecast being wrong.
Called the opposition and they agreed to come over and wait for conditions and we eventually got started after 2pm in a reduced 70 over game. With them top of the table the key was to win the toss to get them batting first on a damp wicket.
We lost the toss.
They, of course, inserted and a very good swing bowler operated from the top end in trainers no less. Lots of sawdust, but he was still struggling a little. Nevertheless his bowling was too good with excellent slip fielders behind to snaffle chances, which were plenty. Not what you expect in Div 11.
So we were quickly 2-4, with the 2 being extras and the top 4 batsmen all getting blobs and all caught behind, in slips or gully. Then 7-5 as Peter Drury followed suit.
John and Simsy rebuilt a bit with good batting in difficult conditions, often as not swinging and missing against the swinging ball, but we were still 59-9 until Ed and Josh batted very well to follow the current Test trend of high 10th wicket stands (well, high by the standard of the match, anyway) to get us to 102.
Watford batted aggressively to knock off the total and lost 3 wickets doing it. Should have been 4 with Tim dropping a simple keeping chance by celebrating a half second too early. Off Ed, who bowled good fast left arm. A mention for Josh, too, who was often too good for the bat but just couldn't find the edge or the stumps. OC continued his recent bad form by starting with 3 full tosses, all swatted for 4. Not the recipe for defending a small total.
But the forecast WAS wrong, it was a glorious afternoon. Only thing done wrong on such a day was not winning the toss, I feel. Must try harder.
