Redbourn IV v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 12 Jul 2014 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report Arriving 10 minutes late at Redbourn wasn't the best of starts, after getting stuck behind steam tractors doing around 5mph and the skipper also lost the toss, with Redbourn opting to bat first. His thoughts were to insert anyway, so it wasn't a bad one to lose.

It was quickly obvious that the pitch was not the best with variable bounce and a tendency to move sideways (the ball, that is, not the pitch). Charlie made the most of it as opening bowler with the opener leaving a ball that was swinging out only for it to land and jag back a little to take off stump. Simsy was having a hard time of shooters and movers and came away bruised and sore. Huw was wheeling away at the other end and also causing problems and wickets went regularly at both ends. The pick was a ball from Charlie that pitched a foot or so outside off and came back to hit middle.

Joe replaced Charlie and picked up the skipper first ball and Huw then bowled an over of filth - two wides off side, one wide leg side and then one straight to pick up a caught and bowled. There's no justice in this world.

Jamie had a couple of overs with a couple of youngsters batting well and despite good balls he was picked off through the off side. OC was brought on for straighter bowling - with worries about the score getting too high on this pitch - and did the trick, albeit with a full toss that was hit up to mid on. He and Charlie then polished off the last couple for a target of 108.

10 overs before tea saw Stephen and Peter out LBW and the skipper was nervous with a three figure score to catch. But he needn't have been. TP and Adam settled down to seeing the bowling off and batted with sage heads belying their age. TP was waiting for the bad ball and punishing it and both were working well together, lifting the score from 18-2 to around 80. The back of the target had been broken and it was difficult to believe that it was the same pitch.

TP got out to a very good catch at square leg just 5 short of his fifty, having just been dropped there the ball before and Amish didn't manage to last too long, but OC came in and hit the bad balls well to polish off the rest of the target, the winning runs coming in 4 byes, summing up the problems for keepers.

A very good team performance, with everybody supporting well in the field and focussing on their batting and bowling roles. We continue to move up the table, now 13th.
