Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Old Elizabethans III on Sat 31 May 2014 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Having your opposition at 18-6 when they bat first means that you can look forward to an early tea and settle down to watching the one day international in the club house.

But it wasn't as simple as that, of course.

On a damp pitch which had had rain for the best part of the previous week, the oppo won the toss and opted to bat first. With very few seamer options, the skipper decided to try his hand opening with TP bowling his own seamers from the other end. Cue batsmen queueing up to get themselves out.

TP bowled well and deserved the wickets he took, but it must be said that Mr Dudley's wickets were sheer thievery, with 2 short balls looped to gully and a full toss swiped to mid-wicket. Add to that an unnecessary run out and they found themselves at said 18-6.

The 7th wicket partnership did what the rest should have done and looked to bat sensibly. They also rode their luck with a regulation catch dropped early on at square leg and another shot going straight in the air with Will B not being able to spot it from under his helmet. They added 70 runs and things were looking rosier for them. New boy John English bowled well too (would have opened with his tidy seamers if known beforehand) and split the partnership, followed up by OC taking a tidy running catch at deep mid off. A flying pig was seen shortly afterwards.

The last two wickets also didn't come easily and they got up to 116. Definitely more than we wanted.

The good news was that we had 50 overs to get them and Peter camped in for the long haul. Young Sam Quinn looks a very good prospect with a couple of gorgeous drives, but he was unlucky to clip his pad with his bat and fool the umpire into giving the edge behind. Another quick one brought Puds in and Pete and Puds steadily accumulated with Puds going for his big hits when seeing the ball in the right place. The score was up to halfway when Puds went for one shot too many seeing the square leg up and missed the shot across the line.

Things were still going very slowly.

Another few wickets ticked away - with TP again looking promising with his shots - when John English came in and watched carefully for a few overs. Then he let loose. Several fours and a couple of sixes later it was pretty well all over with John kindly allowing Peter the honour of nudging the last couple for the win. 44 slow overs on a sticky pitch and Peter had 28 runs to show for it - with John overtaking him at the last, batting from number 8.

But a job well done all round. The youngsters all did their bit, with Dan Macey also bowling a tidy leg spin spell and good fielding from them all.
