Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Redbourn III on Sat 10 Aug 2013 at 1pm
Match was Drawn with scores level
Match report
The disappointment of not winning a game where we had the scores level after the 1st ball of the last over with 2 wickets left will take a little time to go.
With 5 needed to win, OC crashed the first ball for 4 and we seemed to be there. But 4 consecutive dots followed by a chaotic attempt at the single off the last ball and a run out meant that we only emerged with 6 points rather than the full 30, or even 20 if we'd managed a tie (losing the 2 wickets in the attempt).
Earlier, we won the toss and, with a strong batting line up, opted to chase a total. The Redbourn openers, including a small 14 year old, were very solid and the youngster, Taylor, is obviously going to be a class player in future. Both Jack Hunter and Rob could not get anything out of their first spell on a pretty flat pitch. Eventually, Ted Stanford got the breakthrough having the skipper caught just short of his 50 by Puds in slip.
The number 3 was aggressive and swung big and hard. After 30 overs the score was 160 and looking to get very big. Jack came back for a 2nd spell and had the number 3 bowled and looked much more threatening. The youngster was starting to look a bit tired and the ball was getting softer, with the big guns out of the way, Redbourn struggled a lot more against Jack and OC and the scoring rate coming steadily down. A last couple of over slash got them to 214 where, at one point, more than 250 seemed likely.
Nic started promisingly, opening with Andre, but played across the line to the young left armer to be bowled. Ted, Puds and Harvey then got into the bowling and kept the scoring going well, with Andre in support. Puds was hitting particularly hard and should have scored big, but for holing out on the square leg boundary. Harvey, too, hit lose balls hard and was looking odds on for a 50 before skying a hit to cover.
Several more wickets now went down and at around 170-8 it looked against the odds. Peter and OC, however, played positively and hassled the field with their running. The score was ticked along nicely and all was set up nicely for the denouement in the last over. It just didn't happen.
