Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Southgate Adelaide III on Sat 01 Jun 2013 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 13 runs
Match report
Never has a weirder opposition taken the field against us. A very vocal team battered us from all angles. Mr Buckley was heard to say afterwards that he was feeling that he had just had all his senses assaulted.
Combined with the opening bowler taking to texting from fine leg it was a little surreal.
To give them credit, they always aimed for the win and losing the toss to us and having to bat first didn't fit with their plans. They started slowly under good bowling pressure from Jack and Hamish, and Dan Angel and Oli Holdroyd continued the good work.
After the halfway point Adelaide notched up the pressure and we wilted a little - the skipper has to own up to 2 drops as they swung. They had a couple of players prepared to swing free and six or seven 6s were hit in total. Their weak bottom order caved in to George Lewarne's good bowling up the hill and we felt confident chasing 162 on our pitch which was getting drier all the time.
It didn't help when Peter was bowled by the texting bowler in the first over, but Dan and Andre built well and set us up for the chase despite coming under heavy verbals. Dan built a good innings with great composure and it was a shame to see him get out to a hit to deep mid-wicket on 48.
After they had gone the pressure started to tell and our deep batting order didn't really come through as hoped. Oli and Mark gave us hope towards the end and were looking good, but Oli snicked behind and when Jack went to a stunner of a catch behind point it was looking bleak. Mark and Hamish took us close, but Mark, too, went to a snick behind and the game was up, losing by 13 runs.
