Match report
After three weeks away it was good to get back at Kicheners field for a home fixture. Well that was the theory anyway. Little did we know the sheer magnitude of work that was required to be done before and during the game. First up was moving the sightscreen back into position by moving it 90 degrees. A simple task you might think. However given it weighs 10 tonnes it required the super human quintet of Smith, O’Neil, Herring, Schaw and Walker (yes I got our umpire to help out) to lift and move it. Next up was putting out the boundary rope. A simple task you might think. However given one end of the rope got caught in the turning axle the captain had to saw the frayed rope with his house keys to get the rope freed and the boundary out. Not an ideal preparation which left our warm up fairly short.
Anyway amongst all the issues the skipper won the toss and elected to bat. With Jez and Will playing the patient game in the middle against some good bowling from the opposition the next task suddenly appear. In the high wind the sightscreens at the far end of the ground, which happen to be much lighter than the aforementioned other screen, had blown over. With the help of Greg, a mallet, three stakes, some rope and in the end 4 very large tractor tyres the screens were anchored down. Clearly during this team building adventure what more could we have wanted than one of the opposition fielders to split his finger open which left Dighty having to give him a lift to A&E.
Finally we were able to get back to the cricket where Jez and Will were playing well and building a very good opening stand. Jez passed his 50 with minimal fuss and after he departed along with Will, Luke and Gus took over the reins. Luke dropped anchor (ask the oppo keeper to explain) with a lovely cover drive will Gus played some cultured one handed hits through midwicket. Once the two youngsters gave way to the two oldies of the team it was left to the skipper and James to put on a quick 60 runs to take the team passed 200 and maximum batting points. It is worth mentioning the captain’s two very large sixes on what was an incredible large boundary. Clearly doing bicep curls with the sightscreen early had helped.
Another good tea and discussions on who should be in Endland’s Rugby team’s back line was followed by the opposition’s innings. The returning Seb bowled well and was duly rewarded with a wicket. Luke also bowled well and with the help of Gus taking an unbelievable catch at 1st slip (although had he not been discussing his Euro 2012 tips he may have reacted quicker) the opposition were two down and Berko were on top. However that was when the rain came and somewhat took away our momentum. As is always the case the ball being soaking wet stopped swinging and was hard to grip. Batsman 3 and 4 took the opportunity to attack and suddenly they had taken the game away from us. Once we had their Aussie snagged with a well taken catch from Ben, the skipper tried to gee the troops up with a rousing speech of Churchillian proportions mentioning they probably had no batting to come. Unfortunately it was ex Warwickshire keeper Kieth Piper who was walking to the crease. ......
In the end however the opposition got the runs 5 down. Another 15 points but we must start winning games. We are good enough.
Anyway with the skipper’s pink slip in his back pocket it was left to the players to talk about the match over a few quiet pints. Then some noisy strawpedos and a very loud Jagerbombs.
