In the words of Willie Nelson we were “On the road again” for the third consecutive week. A trip to Hatfield Hyde was on the cards. A very apt name indeed given Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel of a similar name with their captain playing Dr Jekyall, a delightfully friendly character, and the rest of his team, Mr Hyde.
The pitch looked wet and soft, unsurprising given the weather that has besieged the season so far. No doubt it was going to be a tough pitch to bat on. The skipper then proceeded to lose the toss once again but was honestly surprised the opposition decided to bat.
What happened next was the worst fielding display I have seen since playing U9s cricket. We dropped their opener 5 times as he painfully edged towards his 50. We dropped numerous other chances and let the opposition score over 200 runs. To the players that are reading this I will say only this. I never want us to field as badly as that. Ever. Everyone was guilty and extra fielding practice will be organised in the next few weeks. You have been warned.
Anyway we were set 215 off 49 overs. The wicket was moist and sticky, slow and low. It would be difficult. Little did I realise that the young Mr Schaw would make the pitch look more like a SCG test match wicket. He and Doug played brilliantly together with Doug a solid and calming influence on the attacking and aggressive New Zealander. At one point it looked as though the two would win the game on their own. However the 129 run partnership was broken and the opposition got their luck when Gus chopped on. Three quick wickets and suddenly the oppo smelt blood. All the clichés in the book came out and the home crowd suddenly found their voice (Much to the annoyance of the away team given the close proximity to their balcony i.e. they were sitting right next to us shouting “Come the Hyde, you know where to bowl it”. Numerous times)
John Fearn came in and after some hefty blows the prospects of Berkhamsted’s first win was on the cards. The tensions were high but unfortunately once he and John Herring departed so did our chance of victory despite our two Hertfordshire county players at the crease (over 50s that is). Simmsy and Dighty blocked out the last remaining balls much to the disappointment of the opposition who thought we should have gone for it thereby giving them more chance of winning. Hmm. Yes. Because I’m all about gifting 30 points......
Anyway a draw which could have been so much more had we not been so poor in the first half. However nothing we can do about it now. Forget and move on. Nevertheless another 16 points gained. A win is just around the corner. I have confidence.
