Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI v London Colney on Sat 12 May 2012 at 1.00pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report After three consecutive weekends of cricket washed out by what can only be described as apocalyptic weather we finally managed to start the season off. With the ducks and Noah’s Arc still in attendance in the outfield on the 1st XI pitch the match took place in the unfamiliar territory (certainly for the skipper who last played up there in 1996) on the top pitch.

The toss was lost and Berkhamsted were inserted on a pitch which looked to favour the bowlers. After 10 runs were scored by debutant Lee from the first 3 balls of the innings, the opposition appeared to have made a terrible mistake. Unfortunately that was the main highlight of a lacklustre innings from the home side. Too many poor shots accounted for the majority of our dismissals with the pitch playing a lot better than one would have thought. Patience was the order of the day to build on the starts we made but unfortunately as a team we tried to be far too aggressive highlighted by the sheer number of people being bowled.

However this is a young and inexperience side and we will learn from this innings greatly. Mentions should go to Jez and Seb who played some cracking shots during their innings.

As always tee was magnificent and after what was an inspirational team talk by the skipper (no doubt reminiscent of Rafa Benitez in the Champions League final 2005) we took the field thinking a few quick wickets and we were in the match. And an early wicket did come in the second over. Ben bowled a lovely away swinging long hop which the batsman couldn’t resist edging to “safe hands” behind the stumps. Seb snagged another wicket, well caught by another new face Luke Frey at square leg. Unfortunately the two openers had to come off after they reached their allowed limit. They can smoke, drink, vote, get married but are only allowed to bowl 7 consecutive overs. Strange.

Ben bowled very well for his 7 overs and was unlucky not to get a second wicket when the skipper dropped a chance in the uncustomary position of second slip. Unfortunately the opposition got on top following some loose bowling and despite a good tight spell from Dighty, the opposition skipper finished us off with a couple of mighty blows.

A disappointing start to the season but we shouldn’t be downhearted. It’s a new team playing their first game together. As long as we continue to enjoy ourselves and improve each week then we can definitely compete in this league and there is no reason why we won’t be near the top. Although we lack a dancing dog we certainly have the talent.
