Match report
First game of the season saw the sun come out after 3 weeks of incessant rain and we travelled to Northwood feeling somewhat rusty after very little net practice and Pepless due to his conscientious objection to artificial pitches. Skipper Mark lost the toss and we were bowling with Jack and Jacob not getting much luck with a couple of spilled chances. Hamish came on to remove dangerous opener Thakrar and thereafter the spin twins Jack Furlong and Mark removed the middle order, the former's attempts to break the world record for the fastest ever over only thwarted by his own inability to keep it on the square. Just when we thought we were going to be chasing 120 enter big hitting Dave who plundered 5 sixes on his way to a rapid 54 not out to set us a challenging 179 for victory.
Adam and Peter set off comfortably to 23 without loss and all seemed set fair for a run chase when we suffered the mother of all collapses including 2 nightmare run-outs to leave us disconsolate on 59-8 despite a quickfire 19 from Rob. However, Jacob was determined to fight for the draw and for 22 overs defied the bowlers with some solid defensive technique. He was ably assisted by Hamish, coming in last, who biffed his way to top score with 20 including a mighty six which he celebrated like he had won the ashes. With 3 balls to go Hamish was bowled but Peter at square leg had already called dead ball for excitable fielders running all over the place - and a few seconds later we had secured the draw.
Northwood were most hospitable hosts and a very good side so we did well to avoid defeat.
