Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Redbourn III on Sat 11 Aug 2012 at 1pm

Match report
An excellent match where any of 4 results was possible from the last ball of the game ended in a draw.
Redbourn won the toss and asked us to bat and it became obvious pretty quickly that the wicket was slow - highly unusual for a Berkhamsted wicket on the top square. The start was good and Machon, Dudley and George Lewarne took the score to 51-1. However, once wicket started going then an all too familiar cascade began and soon we were 91-7. Long time absentee David Westley and Hamish Jarvie batted positively and hit the bad balls well to give us a target to bowl at at 142 all out.
We opted to stick with the old ball for the entire Redbourn innings, to give them a tougher time of scoring on the slow wicket and with Ian Campbell wheeling at one end and Hamish nagging at the other the scoring crawled. The scoreboard pressure told and wickets started to fall. Two stonking catches in the covers by the brothers Lewarne - Jacob and George - helped and when they were 90-7 we felt that we were on top. In an exact mirroring of our innings, though, the lower order batsmen batted well and there was a tussle for the balance of the game as overs were running out and they ticked the score along. With 8 wickets down at the start of the last over and 4 runs required, it looked as if Redbourn had it in them to make it, but OC, bowling his 24th consecutive over, had their no. 9 out on the 2nd ball and the no. 11 was looking dodgy. he managed to scramble off strike and it came down to 3 runs to win off the last ball and 1 wicket left. Only a single was managed and all shook hands on a great game played.
OC and Hamish bowled excellently and the Lewarne brothers, too, contributed good overs where it was needed. The fielding was of a top order for a 3rd XI game and nothing was given easily to the batting side. Well done all for nearly pulling it off.
