Old Owens III v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 09 Jun 2012 at 1pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
At otherwise excellent facilities, the week's rain had rendered the Old Owens pitch a sticky one and runs proved hard to come by with disciplined bowling. Peter Dudley won the toss and inserted the opposition, looking for a low total to chase with a good bowling side.
Sam and Josh opened the bowling strongly and had little luck as the first wicket proved hard to come by. When it did fall on the change of bowling to Mike's spinners the no. 3 looked like he didn't fancy the faster bowling, but we only had one on now, in the shape of Ethan, who was troubling him, but he swiped Mike to all parts with a good eye and less technique.
Ethan got rid of him and the other opener and gradually we worked our way through the order where the most productive shots turned out to be the hard swings square. The ball was sometimes trampolining and most batsmen were disconcerted. A good 10th wicket wag got them to 164-9.
Dan Angel got 4 wickets with his spin, proving that the slower stuff was generally the more productive.
Of special note were 2 excellent efforts at diving catches by Andre in the slip cordon where he couldn't quite pull them off. One was a superb swan dive which I wish we had someone snapping on the boundary with full telephoto lens.
In reply, our more correct players struggled with getting shots away and the asking rate climbed. Wickets started to fall and frustration grew. Nick Williams came in to great effect pciking the right balls to hit and hit them well. The opposition skipper gave us the chance to go for it while hoping for wickets and the lower order did us proud in the try. Eventually we had to seal up with 8 down, just under 3 overs left and a number 11 who hadn't batted in years and not looking confident.
In the last over, Hamish, who had been defending well, dollied a simple looping chance to gully off the 3rd ball and somehow he contrived to drop it. The opposition were flabberghasted and doubly so when Josh was bowled off the very last ball to a beauty. They dreamed of what might have been.
