Bayford & Hertford v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 23 Jun 2012 at 1.00pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won By 6 wickets
Match report
Sutton United vs Coventry City in 1988, Kenya vs West Indies in 1996, Scotland vs Australia in 2012. None of the aforementioned giant killings compares to the Berko youngsters despatching of Herts Div 4 top side Bayford & Hertford in their own back yard.
The day started with pleasant debate over the oil price and why none of the resent deflation caused by the ongoing eurozone crisis and its impact on global GDP growth hadn’t been passed onto the consumers that buy petrol at the Hall Park Esso petrol station. In the end the skipper had to tell Gus to stop whinging and get in his car.
After the long trip across the county a very pleasant ground welcomed Berkhamsted to the home of undefeated Bayford and Hertford. The track was hard and dry and presented a dilemma for the skipper who had won the toss. After posting some formidable totals and failing to bowl the opposition out, it was time to roll the dice. The opposition were inserted.....
Ben and the recalled Joe opened up the bowling and both offered some early encouragement. Both bowled well but it was young Joe that forced the early brake through snagging their opener caught at point from the returning AJ. The two combined again to send their captain packing. In fact you couldn’t keep AJ out of the game. Despite his critique of previous match reports being too dry for his tastes (Obviously once I am a published novelist I will remind him of his comments) the skipper decided to bowl him. Awful. Terrible. All over the place. Lucky. Is obviously how I would like to describe his bowling. But it wasn’t. It was good. The extra zip and bounce keep it tight and accounted for their other opener who was starting to look dangerous.
Meanwhile Gus at the other end was bowling some of his usual tight off spin which had the opposition young number 4 batsman in all sorts of trouble. There was no answer as Berkhamsted squeezed the runs dryer than the authors wit. Huw took up the reins where AJ left off and still no runs were leaked and the opposition finished their 53 overs on 133/8. A sterling effort all round in the field and great bowling. Special mention to Gus who finished with figures of 19-4-34-4. And very unlucky not to pick up his first Berkhamsted Michelle.
Clearly I would love to write more about our batting but England vs Italy has just gone to penalties so I’m slightly distracted. All I can say is the now renowned AJ scored a great 60 (although we won’t mentioned the shot he got out to), Gerald has just scored and after a few cheap wickets it was left to Steed and the skipper to nervelessly (like a Pirlo penalty) see the side home.
A great win and no doubt a few beers were drunk especially after the news filtered through that Hamish in the 2s had reached a 100. Runs that is, not conquests. Yet.
By the way isn’t Ashley a girls name.....
