Match report Not quite the happy ending we were looking for as we were comprehensively outplayed in the County Final by a talented St Margaretsbury side. In previous years our U17s didnt really care whether they batted or bowled first - but on this occasion missing four frontline batters it would have been a good toss to win. Unfortunately we lost the toss and were inserted. Gareth and Mikey made a steady start and there was no sense of the collapse to come but once the openers had gone to loose shots wickets began to tumble. At no 3 Ben appeared in no trouble whatsoever and began to take runs off all the bowlers but as wickets fell consistently at the other hand he naturally had to play more cautiously and runs began to dry up against excellent swing and spin bowling. Just as he seemed to find a partner in Sam then Ben too succumbed to a good delivery and the innings quickly folded to 93 all out.

After a magnificent tea was enjoyed by all we went out to give it our best shot but in Barbett and Blemkin the hosts had 2 good openers with rock solid defensive technique and the ability to hit the bad ball for four. With Sam and Seb having no joy Mikey turned to the spin of Huw and Romit as our best chance but with the first wicket not falling until 51 runs were on the board it was always going to be a big ask. Both Huw and Romit bowled good spells and on another day Huw especially could have picked up 4 or 5 but in the end Blemkin and Willis saw St Margaretsbury home with 14 overs to spare for a comfortable 7 wickets win. It was hard to begrudge St Margaretsbury this success - they had brought a coach load of supporters to Berkhamsted for the first rained off game and were strongly supported by parents, senior players, friends and family for this game again. In contrast our lads had one supporter, thank you Carolyn for helping with lifts and vocal encouragement!

Medals and trophy were presented by John Favager who commented on Ben's fine innings - however on the day we were at least 50 runs short of being competitive. The club would like to congratulate this set of players on 4 magnificent seasons of cricket in which they have been county winners twice and losing finalists twice. They have always represented the club in the true spirit of cricket, have played with flair, enthusiasm and determination and are now a mainstay of our adult teams.
