Match report
Berkhamsted III’s vs Schmid AKA Parkfield and Headstone I’s 13th August 2011
A major crisis with availability meant the actual 2’s were scrapped. With the exception of 3 second team bowlers Huw Barnett, Ben Beard and Sam Harlow (except he didn’t turn up as he was ill) the 3’s missing the batting of Buckley, Goodwyn, Hardwicke, Puds and Toddy turned up to see how a team of 10 could cope in div 5. In turn the 4ths were to play as the 3rds and our 5ths to play the 4th team fixture. We felt like a group of honest shop keepers about to open our doors to looting hoodies.
A pleasure to be on the main pitch with umpires, sightscreens, a boundary rope and a scorer. The toss was won and we elected to bowl. Ben opened with the Ezard. A great spell from the Wizard with their batsmen keep nibbling in the corridor of uncertainty gave Jon 4 wickets caught Mark who it is fair to say kept beautifully. Ben bowled economically with a fair bit of whippy bounce. A bit early season Broad and better when pitched up another 15-20 inches. Mark stumped one off Goughie and we had them 42 for 5. Their opener Schmid miss-cued a lofted drive and agile Ali nearly pulled off a blinding catch having run from mid-off to extra cover. It is unlikely anyone else in our team would have got near it and it could hardly be called a half chance but how that could have changed the game.
Schmid tried looking after the other end but there number 7 was left exposed to Ben in his second spell and was bowled leaving them 72 for 6. But Ben ran out of overs, Jon was too stiff to come back and although he bowled well Huw and Goughie could not contain Schmid. He started some serious plundering and pillaging and did a very good job nursing the other end. When he had the strike runs flowed. He made a very good ton and then just started slogging sixes off Goughie, 2 of which Larry helped over the rope. With no other bowler we had to suck it up. He eventually was adjudged LBW for 126 when they were 172-7. Although they hit quite a few up in the air the tail kept tonking and after their 53 overs they ended 213-8.
A very good tea only spoilt by the fact we lost to Wales at rugby although had crucified India in the cricket. Unsurprisingly Schmid opened the bowling and was somewhat quicker and more accurate than our usual fair. Mark disdainfully pulled a short one through mid-on more than mid-wicket but then pulled out mid-drive to chip one back for a caught and bowled. We didn’t offer much resistance to the onslaught. The de-moustachioed Andre launched into his first ball trying to hook it into the field but had a leading edge back to you guessed it Schmid. Ali hung around the longest; mainly it seemed by not having had to face Schmid. Once he did face him he was back on the terrace. At once point the irony of scoring 100 and being denied a 10 wicket haul as we only had 10 men was discussed. However, Charlie spoilt that one by watching a swinging full bunger delivered from the other end onto his stumps. Huw gave the other opener a second wicket leaving Schmid with just a 7 wicket haul. All out for a paltry 42 and not a flashing blue lit Rapid Response Unit in sight.
Ultimately we did well to have them 5 down for not much. Without Schmid obviously it could have been a very different game. Last season he scored 674 runs (third highest in div 5) at an average of 48 and took 44 wickets (fourth highest in div 5) at 21. The naive spectator may see him as a superhero, the cynical observer more as a giant underpanted catfish in a garden pond. Cricketers amongst us wonder why he doesn’t want to challenge himself playing in higher divisions. It is a bit like Lewis Hamilton on Top Gear in the reasonably price car. Good fun and nice to try and get to the top of the leader board but not quite the same as winning a Formula 1 race and racing for the World Championship. Credit where credit due he is a class act and maybe plays for Headstone as he wants the epitaph “One man cricket team”. Well done to the fourths who beat Wormley in the div 9 match to give the 3rds a much needed 30 points.
