Great Gaddesden v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 09 Jul 2011 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets and 10 overs
Match report
Berkhamsted III’s vs Great Gaddesden 9th July 2011
A pleasant ground adjacent to a pub. The pitch covered in a lot of very flat grass. The toss lost and we were batting. Tedium was more descriptive with 11 runs off the first 10 overs. The highlight was watching their left hand over opening bowling run down pitch and Suds thinking the track had been made for him. Larry went in the 11th. A grand total of 24 runs by the 20th over when Duds was caught. Ed Butler-Caddle had one rear off a length and he was caught behind. Enter Puds who immediately smacked a 4 over mid-off. Then it started raining and we came off at 28 for 3 off 23 overs at 2.25pm.
We had quite a bit of rain. Various discussions followed: the outcome of which was that for us to have a game we had to complete 40 overs which meant with drinks (?) and tea and time lost we would have to start by 4.30pm. We would then have 17 more overs and they would get 33. This Duckworth Lewish equation didn’t look good for us. Multiple pitch inspections were taken; they used a cowshit scrapper to move water off the top of the square and even attacked it with a fork. Liberal wood shavings were then applied and swept off. Having removed our batsmens’ guards technically they had tampered with the pitch. During the prolonged tea-interval the roller was inspected and found to have a seat belt – this answered the question as to why more rolling than cutting had occurred.
At 4.20pm the oppo were all on the pitch waiting. It was duly inspected by us and did fail to pass Hussey postulate number 1 – the squelch test. The pitch despite its scrape over, shave and brush had not had enough of a blow dry – it still squelched. We said the quagmire was not playable. They were the home team and therefore had the decision that it was. No panel umpires in the county would have agreed but we had to start.
Puds and the Toddmeister got going and moved the score on a bit more sharply before Puds went. The youth all chipped up in the air and Suds joined Aaron at 66 for 7 in the 35th. Trying to increase the rate Toddy was caught as was Suds and Goughie managed to get yorked. 79 all out and we didn’t even use the 40 overs.
We knew with dark clouds that they would try and knock the runs off quickly. Suds took a wicket in the first over. Josh could have had 2 in the second – what a difference that may have made. It was not until the 8th we completed the caught Preedy b Roberts to get the second with 30 on the board. Suds got their number 2 when they were on 43. A shower saw us leave the pitch. It was noted for less than 3.5 minutes so no overs lost. We then had to contend with wiping the mud off the ball and drying it. Ethan bowled well and took two wickets in one over but we just didn’t have enough runs to play with. Some half chances went down and some edges over the slip, it was not our day. We can’t blame the rain for our ridiculously slow start and having played in the conditions it smacks of sour grapes to blame our loss on wet pitch.
