Sawbridgeworth V v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 04 Sep 2010 at 12:30
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost Sawbo won by 2 wickets

Match report A remarkable game to end the season, where we managed to win the league title but also lose our first game for 2 months!

Our target was 15 bonus points to make sure of the league winners spot but skipper Peter Wale lost the toss and we were inserted on a slow low wicket. Despite the words "Andre" and "quick start" rarely appearing in the same sentence our reliable opener was looking fit and relaxed after our enforced break and he took the game to the opposition with some strong pull shots. With Steve (Mr Runs) Wale struggling to time the ball Andre kept the run rate moving and to gasps of astonishment from his team mates ran 4 threes in an excellent knock of 53. Steve gradually started to find his range and reached yet another half century, the epitome of consistency this season. Pete Dudley looked in good form but then played over a straight one, then enter the big hitters, first Toddy with a fluent 23 and OC with a belligerent 20 so that we comfortably reached our target of maximum batting points.

So, could we bowl them out? More importantly, could we get the 5 wickets we needed for the title. Initially it looked good with our 2 young guns bowling straight and fast, Josh removing one of the openers. However, their number 3, alarmingly nicknamed Fish, began sending the ball rocketing to all corners, unleashing several thunderous drives to leave us a tad concerned. OC came on to tempt the other opener to sky one to the reliable Pete Dudley and after a flurry of boundaries Mark trapped the sawbo skipper in front to leave them 3 down. Relief came from Steve who grabbed the 2 vital wickets needed with his clever tactic of bowling 6 "quicker balls" every over. So what happened after that - well OC clean bowled a couple of batters and Sam made an easy run out but the no 3 was still there playing like a cross between Ponting and Viv Richards and reaching his century with ease. Needing 7 to win off the last over bowled by Sam the redoubtable Fish was on strike for the last ball needing 2 to win. Luckily, he smears it straight to Toddy standing at square leg so the game is drawn.....but hold on, Toddy has been snaffling magic mushrooms in the outfield and he thinks they are 9 down instead of 8, he fires the ball at the stumps for a heroic run out, the ball misses and hurtles off into the outfield for overthrows and the winning runs. Their number 3 Fish finished on a memorable 127 not out and then told us he used to play at a higher level but hasnt played much in recent years due to problems with his eyes! God help us if he ever improves his eyesight.

An exciting game against a very hospitable opposition and we were genuinely sad to hear later they had been relegated.

Congratulations to Peter and the whole 4th X1 squad on a great season!
