Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Kings Langley III on Sat 19 Jun 2010 at 13:00
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets and 7 overs
Match report
Berkhamsted III’s vs Kings Langley III 19th June 2010
A strong blustery North-Westerly wind blew through the ground. With most of the team watching England beat Australia at rugby Charlie had a long walk above the tree line to the top wicket on the top pitch. His parting words “I could be some time.” The force ten brought him back a fair bit quicker with news he had won the toss and we were bowling.
Paul Langley and Ben Beard opened. Paul generating a fair pace and shook up their skipper with a rearing short one that was well fended off with the gloves. He departed soon after with a sharp catch by Tim Buckley at second slip. Ben had the other opener playing on. Two down with 9 on the Telegraph. Their 3 and 4 looked more at ease and although Jon beat the bat a few times the score moved up to 90. Goughie replaced Bart at the top end. Their number 3 tried to hit the first ball out the ground on the leg side and missed, unthwarted he tried to hit the second out the field straight and was comfortably stumped by Ben Langley. Next over Jon had a caught behind turned down (their umpire said the keeper was the only one to know and that he hadn’t appealed). Next ball the same thing happened, Ben appealed and their number 3 was given – although hardly ecstatic with the decision.
The 6 and 7 were both dropped, the only positive being the fines kitty particularly as one catch was dropped by two players. With the total on 112 in the 35th over Jon bowled the number 6. Goughie picked up wickets at the other end; Paul replaced Jon and proved a bit quick for the number 7. Toby and Ben took good catches for the oppo to be all out for 169 in their penultimate over. Oddly their technically best batsmen came in at 8 – we don’t think they had seen him bat before.
A very good tea and a welcome respite out of the wind. Ben Langley and Mark Burgess opened. Ben smacking 2 fours in the first over. After 14 overs we were on 61 and looking well set. Mark came forward, allegedly edged onto his pads and was given LBW by Bart. To be fair Bart was man enough to put his hand up a second time to say if he made a mistake he was sorry. Tim and Ben kept the scoreboard moving. Ben was bowled on 73 in the 36th over with the score on 142. Puds came in and with Charlie suggesting he watched the gathering dark clouds he just watched the ball and smacked some good boundaries including a big 6. Tim ended on a useful 38 not out. We won with 8 wickets and 7 overs to spare.
Another good win although Kings Langley appeared weaker on the day than their season record suggested. They had 4 wins in their first four games against top half teams – maybe they have lost a player or two to higher teams. After the washout weekend they have drawn and lost 2. We have actually won 5 and only lost 1 compared to the two teams ahead of us winning 5 and losing 2. It seems we lack points from our draw and loss. We are 15 points behind Great Gaddesden and 14 points behind Boxmoor who we have next week. Thanks to Mickey for umpiring again. Man of the match Ben for his 73, catch and stumping with Goughie’s Michelle (Pfeiffer – five for) in contention.
