Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 9 Red v Kings Langley on Mon 18 May 2009 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won Berkhamsted won by 35 runs
Match report
After all the rain over the weekend it was a welcome relief to see the sunshine and with it some excellent cricket to brighten the day.
Kings Langley won the toss and decided to put BCC into bat and Jack Hadden and James Weller made a sound start with a steady partnership of 11. Jake Alderson and Tom Lewis then pushed on making a further 22 together and this was consolidated by Joe Drury and Elliott Reynolds (17 partnership) taking BCC to 250 for 1 with the last pair to bat. However Charlie Ormerod and Tobias Munday were facing Kings Langley’s best bowler (David) who gave nothing away with his accuracy and speed. Three wickets in relatively quick succession pegged back the BCC run machine and only a late fight back by Tobias saw us post a final score of 253 for 4.
With a modest total to defend it was important BCC concentrated on their line and length and again they looked sharp in the field. James Weller again shone with the ball taking a wicket and conceding no runs or extras. Not to be out done, Tom Lewis followed suit with two maidens and one wicket. It was then that BCC took charge of the game as Charlie Ormerod sliced through the Kings Langley defences with 4 wickets. Three in his first over and two as a result of fine catching at midwicket by Joe Drury, the first of which will be talked about for the rest of the season – a single handed catch diving high to his right that anyone in the England XI would be proud to have held!
The boys could have been forgiven for relaxing at this point but far from it. Jack Hadden and Elliott Reynolds kept the next Kings Langley pair back in their creases and gave little away in both runs and extras. The final Kings Langley pair sensed they had little to lose so took the attack to Tobias Munday and Jake Alderson. However both held their nerve and kept bowling good line and length and in doing so saw BCC post their second win of the season.
Another game played in great spirit, so a big thanks to all the boys.
Will Alderson.
