Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Cheshunt II on Sat 29 Aug 2009 at 1:00
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report A home game on a pitch that took a lot of rain the day before. Charlie dithering over what to do if he won the toss was thinking of batting first. He won the toss again and put them in. Mark Burgess started keeping as Peter Drury, courtesy of Easyjet and Luton baggage handlers, was delayed on his return from Nice. Jordan Harrison and Ian Sudbery opened against a team also one man short but looked like it may have been mixed up with a Saga excursion.

(Lots of photos on the website under photo galleries as proof!)

Charlie took a good catch off a Sudder’s long hop in the sixth. He had just moved into short extra cover. Quite an eclectic mix of emotion, relief he was still alive and surprise the ball was in his paws. Jordan impressed with a very good opening spell of 6 overs for 13 and getting some good wheels. Peter finally turned up (possibly the last I will say on the subject as he generously fined himself a jug) and we swapped keepers at the next wicket off Sudders in the fourteenth.

The two spinners kept the runs down with Sudders clearing up the first 4 batsmen experimenting with the most bizarre methods of taking wickets. A top edge sweep off the batsmen head to Ian Putman at gully, another long hop bottom edged onto the foot and onto the wicket and finally the ultra tweaked straight one. Goughie remained wicketless for what had been 43 consecutive overs (a career record for someone with a strikerate of under 30 balls/ wicket). Wicketless maybe but certainly not chanceless. Finally he bypassed the fielders by bowling a batsmen round his legs with a ball the turned up the hill to hit middle – Warnesque and would have done for Gatting he wondered. Sudders completed his Michelle with the top 5 batsmen and Steve breeched to pouch one going over his head to give Goughie his second. Jordan came back to get Goughie on at the other end and prove that although for the second game running we only had 3 bowlers we don’t change keepers as often as our bowlers. Jordan got a deserved wicket in the last over. 129 for 8 off the full 47 overs.

An excellent tea. Toddy and Mark Burgess opened the batting. Toddy gloved one up in the 4th and walked. Steve came out and scored a good 31 with plenty of fours. Mark was caught for 22 with the score on 38 in the eleventh. Some good bowling from their septuagenarian whose arm may not have been perfectly straight and probably not got to the vertical in Jordan’s lifetime. An altercation with Toddy calling a wide which had gone leg side to Puds and beat the keeper. The keeper came half way down the wicket to tell Toddy “It is not a twenty/20 game, we don’t play legside wides in this league!” Toddy said “It was a good 8 inches down the leg side and was a wide, now go back to your position.” The spat continued at the end of the over with the keeper saying “He didn’t mind losing but he wanted to be sure the umpires played by the rules of the league” and Toddy came out with the perfect repost “You seem to be under the illusion this is a discussion. It’s not. I’m the umpire. I called a wide, you should not argue with the umpire and are setting a very poor example to the youngsters.” Very limited intervention from their captain was duly noted. The guy may play Herts over 60’s and still be a talented player but barracking umpires is not cricketing de rigueur.

Full credit to Ian Merrett who, looking very tanned and relaxed, appeared (slightly later than …..) to support us within an hour of returning from his hols. Simon put on 18 before being caught, Puds hit 19 before being caught and our chairman Julian teased Peter by not letting him get off the mark with “No”, “No”, “No.” They saw us home in the 35th over with Julian unbeaten on 23 with 4 good fours.

Another good win and 30 more points in the bank. Unlike last week we kept in touch with the run rate (albeit a lot easier) and accelerated though the target. It means, short of penalties, we can’t come lower than second and definitely go up. Champagne celebrations were enjoyed courtesy of Julian. Pirton are 14 points ahead of us and play Welwyn Garden City who are third and not guaranteed promotion next week. We play Waltham X Rosedale, on an artificial wicket, who are fifth 13 points behind fourth placed Watton at Stone and promotion prospects. If we get 30 points, Pirton need to win or get an unlikely 17 point draw/loss to win the league. It makes sense to take our game seriously just in case Pirton slip up. They are in the box seat but have a lot more pressure on it going wrong and missing out on the division title.
