Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Southgate Compton II on Sat 18 Jul 2009 at 1:30
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Charlie won the toss and put them in. Ian Merrett and Jon Izzard opened the bowling. After 13 overs the young opener finally managed to hit a ball off Ian which was caught by Charlie at silly extra cover and he departed for a slow roasted duck. In the 24th over their skipper made his 50 out of 58 runs on the board. Eventually in the 28th over Goughie was finally brought on to replace the tiring wizard and he departed for 54 caught by Ned Kilgannon at mid off. Their number 3 was good at smacking short balls for 4 and with 8 wickets in hand they speeded up a bit. Their keeper was caught cutting to Steve Wale off Goughie in the 38th and Ian had two thirds of a hat trick in the 44th. Their number three, a good catch from Ned at mid off and their number 6 holed out into the safe Sherj hands in the deep. The last two could not hit the ball off the square and the opening bowlers bowled out the overs. Although not able to perfect the wicketardo spell Trundledour did a good job keeping the runs down. They ended with 163 for 5 off 47 overs. A top effort from Simon Brennan who took on the keeper’s role on the day.

A fair tea, it seems some of us missed the cakes, England with their hands round the throat of the Aussies. The great Sherj opened with the mighty Toddy. One of their openers proved hard to get away and ended up bowling right through the innings. The other was difficult to hit mainly as he had completely dysfunctional radar with wides either side of the wicket. In the tenth he managed to bowl a straight one and Toddy going for the big drive was yorked. Steve came in and played some good shots. Twice Sherj had him running fours! We were 83 in the 21 and on course. Steve departed for 26 caught in the 23rd over. Simon entered the fray and smacked a few fours getting caught for 12 in the 29th. Ned played some classy drives and put on 23 not out with 5 fours. Sherj carried his bat with 67 not out. We ended up winning with 7 wickets and 10 overs to spare.

It appeared the opposition were resigned to losing from the start and just wanted to gain some points. Their skipper did say if they had another 20 runs on the board it could have been more of a game. Personally I would back 7 batsmen to score 2 an over by some form of modus operandi especially with the wand waver at 10 but what do I know. We remain second in the league.
