Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Knebworth Park V on Sat 11 Jul 2009 at 1:30
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report There had been a few showers. Knebworth lost the toss and Charlie elected to chase. Bart Smith and Jordon Harrison opened the bowling and there were 27 runs on the board after the first 10 overs. Jordon had a couple of edges into/ through the slips. Bart struck in the 11th with a smart catch by Simon at gully – he is beginning to own that position. In the 13th Bart had two more bowled. It looked like it could be a rout. John Inman their captain came in to set up camp and stop the team “Going down!”

Their young county number 2 edged one to the keeper Peter Drury but didn’t walk – what do they teach them nowadays! Goughie had him stumped with some smart glove work by Peter in the 26th over with the score on 58. Their skipper and the car crash cricket number 6 started some tonking. Tom Baker replaced Goughie and got the ball to collide with the stumps. Barty keep toiling at the top end and took two more wickets to end with a deserved five for 85. Wicketless Jordan, having given a bit of stick to the young Doctor Who, came back on and dismissed their skipper for a well batted 72. Peter Drury ran out the number 10 on the last ball and they ended up with 201 for 9 off the full 47. A good effort from them to put on 100 in the last 14 overs.

Another excellent tea slightly ruined by seeing the England score of 20-2 chasing 230+ to stay in the game. Ben Langley and Simon Brennan opened with the prediction from Charlie that if Ben carried his bat we would win. A reasonable start with 40 on the board after 10 overs before Simon was bowled for 12. Enter Aaron Todd who had a little look then with a bowling change let rip. The guy was having a bit of trouble with his run up and after a couple of false starts and a no ball: smash 4, smash 4, smash 4 and smash 6. He was crushed, mumbling and gibbering like a madman - 20 runs conceded off 1 over, his lifetime worst and he wasn’t keen to start his second one. Toddy went onto 64 before getting stumped giving the charge to their non walking batsmen bowling some tidy off breaks. To be fair it was drizzling a bit of rain, looked dark and we needed to get finished. Enter Puds who smacked yet another 6 over extra cover. We passed their total in the 39th over with Ben on an unbeaten 96 and a debate over whether he got any bat on 4 leg byes. A very good knock and deserved a ton.

Another good win by 8 wickets and 4 overs. Confidence is high and a good team atmosphere. Miles Harrison wasn’t needed to bat but provided some incisive debate on the Lions tour. Bart was lucky he didn’t have to bowl in a tutu and the only gouging was Charlie’s spike on the ball. We remain second in the league 20 points behind Pirton but over 30 points clear of next team. Putting John “I’m free” Inman’s predilections behind us we are on the way to an annus mirabilis.
