Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 103 runs
Match report
A broiling, scorching, sun kissed day at Kitchener's for our next installment of the Royals season. Also World Cup Quarter Final Day. We took the field with our usual mixture of vets and U13s and U14s.
Bushey batted first with the two Toms opened the bowling - Tom D getting the early breakthrough. We kept it tidy but didn't get any more wickets for a while until James came on to get 3 quick scalps and when Simon (jetting in from Singapore for some warmer weather) took another the opposition were 5 down for 70 and we were looking at a possible victory. But how quickly the gods of cricket can change and Busheys no 6 and 7 proceeded to dispatch us all to all parts at more than 10 an over - very good hitting and we had no real answer to it despite Peps ringing the changes with the bowling. I think the technical term is being put to the sword. A little story here - when Nick Faldo was 12 years old he allegedly 3 putted a green playing with his dad and said "that was silly I wont do that again". We need to apply the same philosophy to wides - why do we keep bowling these? We gave them 24 runs and 4 extra overs in wides - a cardinal sin, especially in that heat. We were very grateful for a respite and some shade after 40 overs but the opposition had racked up a daunting score of 309.
After an extended tea to watch the footy we emerged back into the heat to make a spirited effort on the total - but realistically we could have only got close if one of our senior players had made a big hundred. As it was Steen, Simon, Puds and James all made useful contributions but would have been fined in the 2s for "getting in and getting out" and the youngsters all chipped in with a few runs to get us up to maximum bonus points and beyond. So not a disaster, another 17 points in the bag but we are still looking for that elusive first win of the season and we remain second from bottom of Reg Div B west
