Berkhamsted Cricket Club Sunday XI v Stage CC on Sun 25 Jun 2017 at 2pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report The first match of the season saw a youthful team playing the usually strong and experienced Stage on a sunny day at home.

Captain Greener lost the toss and we were in the field with 10 as the Coach was umpiring the Ladies' team on the school field. Nathaniel opened the bowling from the pavilion end and showed his promise with a tidy spell. In a throwback to the 90's, we opened with spin from the other end with Matt Lake who found that bowling into the wind with a fielder short isn't very pleasant. The opening partnership was broken by Joshua Todd in his new role as a seamer and wickets fell fairly regularly as the captain showed South African tough school of thought by bowling the two youngest players up the hill and into the wind! Jake and Oliver were superb and did it without complaint though and will be better for the experience. With the 1st XI skipper showing his hands still work by taking 3 catches we bowled them out for 157.

Tea was pleasant, although more than a few wished we'd had the wraps as an option!

Two of our three Dan's opened the batting and it was a surprise to everyone to see Dan L getting the Bodyline treatment (more head to be honest)! Dan C didn't survive long enough to suffer the same as he played and missed a straight one. This brought the other Lake to the crease and it was a bit like watching the Waugh brothers. Dan ducking, diving and eking out runs and Matt playing the Mark Waugh role and caressing it to all parts. One short of a well-deserved 50, Matt recreated Mark Richardson's moment (see clip 52sec in -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lGEEUtg_k4 ) although with more serious consequences and had to retire hurt. Josh Todd showed his all-round prowess by smashing 38 off a handful of deliveries including a delightful straight drive over the top. Dan was not out for an excellent 58 as we won by 9 wickets with overs to spare.

It was great to see the 1st XI, Club Coach and Overseas all playing alongside the youngsters and the team winning without significant contributions from any of them. Thanks to the Ladies' team for their support too after their practice match.
