Match report
The Intrepids had this match in the bag - twice! We managed to find a fixture midweek and we were back on the lively school pitch (fast bowlers dream, plenty of bounce) although with quite a lot of grass on the outfield.
Eaton Bray had a couple of players arriving late and after a great opening burst from Jack and David it looked like we might be watching the 1s by 3pm as we reduced the opposition to 17 for 5! At one point David was on a hat trick and very nearly got it. Tom and Oscar both bowled excellent spells, Charlie picked up another wicket but gradually Eaton Bray fought their way back into the game and big left hander Maynard took a particular liking to Jamie's bowling and struck a rapid 34 before Mark removed him with the first ball of his short spell. At one point one of their players shouted out declare! Their skipper who was umpiring said he was a big lad who liked his tea and he was probably shouting "Éclair". The 2 players who arrived late were both good batters and enjoyed a decent partnership before Jack came back to bowl the no 10 and then Nat cleaned up the no 11. A total of 164 was probably 30 more than they should have scored as we spilled 4 chances (3 of them were difficult).
Tea provided for the first time by Rumbles - very nice sandwiches but not quite enough for 22 hungry cricketers.
Our batting was steady not spectacular and we progressed at about 3 an over for the first 20 although we regularly lost wickets. Miles looked impressive for his 21 before being bowled. Charlie and Mark came together when the score was 77 and added 58 runs for the 6th wicket but unfortunately both went in quick succession leaving David and Jack the task of scoring 16 runs off the last 4 overs. Unfortunately its never easy to come in and start to score runs immediately and both had trouble connecting. Last over started with us needing 7 to win, 6 to tie but after 3 dot balls the game was more or less up, David being caught off the last ball to leave us 4 adrift.
Very friendly game on a warm afternoon but disappointing not to chase down the total.
