Match report
Berko II's Clinch Promotion In North London
A hard fought victory meant Berko 2's went from 5th to 2nd on an exciting final day of the season. On a pitch that was about as reliable Jon Ezard's forward defensive we were guaranteed a result no matter what. After deciding to field, Berkhamsted were having second thoughts as some wayward bowling and a fast, heavily sloped outfield meant the runs were scored quickly by the Totteridge batsmen. Luckily for the away side, wickets fell almost as quickly as the second eleven Man of the Season Darren James bowled accurately once again exposing the shocking variability in bounce. It wasn't until the introduction of Dave Sherjan though that Berkhamsted took real control of proceedings and his 5 wickets meant Berkhamsted needed a seemingly simple 146 to win.
Hughes and Chrispin began the Berko reply as though they had a taxi waiting in the Totteridge car park. However Hughes' dismissal lead to a mini collapse and at the tea break Doug Foster joined Aaron Todd at the crease with the Berko innings lurching like a drunk on a clifftop at 49-4. However Berko showed why they deserved to go up with the pair putting on a gritty 70 to effectively win the match for the away team. Foster's elegant strokeplay contrasted sharply with Todd's more workmanlike efforts. It was left to Dent to see the team home with man of the match Doug Foster. A few anxious moments followed after the game until news emerged that, thanks to other results on the day, we had achieved promotion for the second successive season.
Congratulations to Steve Tougher and all the guys who turned out for the 2's over the season. Team spirit, determination and a little bit of skill meant that Toughs was able to oversee an excellent campaign founded around a strong strategy. Many many thanks to Dickie Wilding for standing as umpire for us throughout the season (as well as Ian "Who's the Daddy?" Campbell) and putting up with our inane banter. With the 1st eleven winning Divison 2 and the introduction of extra sides into the league next season the future looks bright for Berkhamsted CC
