Berkhamsted Cricket Club 2nd XI v Langleybury III on Sat 05 Sep 2015 at 12.30pm - limited overs (50)
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 37 runs

Match report Last game of the season with a mathematical chance of promotion - and how close we came to achieving that. Weather had an autumnal feel - long sweater job - and there was a bit of a rush for the scorers box when we were put into bat. Dan and TP opened. TP went quickly but Dan was playing with a flourish, timing the ball exquisitely on the way to a rapid 47 off the first 12 overs. Meanwhile at the other end wickets were falling to their opener who bowled a good line on or around off stump such that for the 4th week running we failed to bat our overs. When Lee was out for an aggressive 31 we had slumped to 120 for 7 with half the 50 overs remaining. We managed to creep up to 160 which wasn't bad on a wicket that was seaming and turning. Just 35 overs though, maybe it was too cold to hang around.

After a disappointing tea which met with more than a few grumbles from the opposition we went out to give it one last shot. Toby was superb, taking the first 4, one a terrific catch by Brett pedaling backwards at cover point. Lee, who seemed to be suffering from an Elvis 76 style rectal blockage, also came to the party, somehow holding on to one that was smashed back at him, and taking 2 more to bring him level with Joe for the season who had trapped the dangerous Stafford in front. Brett almost pulled off the catch of the season at deep square then George took an excellent running high catch off Darren which left Mark who was frozen to bowl a couple of stiff overs to finish off the game. In the bar over many pints we found out that we had finished third, missing out on promotion by just 1 wicket. In reality though we can probably look back on several ugly batting collapses during the season which we will need to eliminate next season to win promotion.

Our thanks to Ian for skippering this season - we had to use a lot of players, 37 I believe the skipper mentioned in a speech that rivaled the Gettysburg address for length and ended with Lee being awarded the player of the year. A well deserved award for his positivity and his contribution to the vocabulary of many of our younger more impressionable players.
