Cublington v Berkhamsted Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 08 Jun 2014 at 2pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost By 27 Runs
Match report
After some difficulty finding the ground it was decided by guy that we were to bowl first. The sun was out and it was one of the hottest days of the year so far. Rob and Joe opened the bowling struggling early before slowly brining some control, with extras leading the scoring for the early part of the game. A bowling change saw the Skipper bring himself on, he was unfortunate not to pick up a wicket, dropping a return catch and having a ball fly through second slip the ball after the slip had been moved. Kian bowled very well from the other end keeping the scoring down restricting the batsman with a tight line. TP and Steed were brought on for their spells and both bowled well in the heat, TP in particular giving the ball lots of flight which earned him high praise from the locals in the pavilion.
The opener retired after batting for a patient fifty. The number 3 came in and played some shots but he and the opener were both eventually caught well by rob at cover off stead. The opening pair return to finish off the innings Joe picking up a wicket in the process keeping the score to a reachable 207 (or somewhere round there scoring was an issue for both sides during the day..)
Gareth and Andre started the run chase well picking on some slightly lose bowling to get the team well above the required run rate. After playing well Gareth lost concentration (again) and edged behind bringing the Skipper to the crease. Andre departed soon after, leaving Luke and TP to do some rebuilding work, the pair played well together, Luke being the main aggressor but TP supporting ably. TP fell to a near unplayable delivery which turned from leg to hit off stump so there wasn’t much he could do. Stead came to the crease and managed to run out Luke who had just got to 50 backing up. Though entirely unintentional it wasn’t what was required and it left the game in a well balanced position.
The team were above the required rate when steed was caught on the boundary by a one handed dive backwards, as spectacular as the catch was the opportunity should have been given. Joe was next in and he simply left a straight one. Leaving the spinner on a hatrick, the captain refused to give his bowler a hatrick ball field, if he had Guy most likely would have been caught. Guy was eventually LBW to the spinner, he seemed perplexed by the decision but seeing as he was on the back foot directly in front of the stumps and the ball hit him just below the knee role the decision seem justified.
Among the fall of wickets Kian had played a few nice strokes and he had now been joint by Rob, who clubbed his first ball to the fence for 4. Comedy then ensued. An early call to run 2 and some poor communication somehow didn’t lead to a wicket. Kian was coming back for the second, Rob hesitate, the yes no yes no game followed resulting in Kian and Rob both standing in the middle of the wicket. The bowler had just received the ball with Rob comfortably out of his ground. Rob then decided to begin running towards the strikers end the same as Kian. Inexplicably the bowler then threw the ball to this end instead of running out rob. Kian made his ground, Rob spun round and beat the returning throw to the bowlers end and it was all forgotten with a punch of the gloves between the pair.
Rob looking to finish the game...charged down the wicket and was comfortably stumped. Leaving us in a poor situation with a run rate of just 4 runs per over required. Charlie came in but ended up not facing, as Kian was caught off a full toss, an unfortunate way to go, George on his return played attackingly but was eventually out with Berkhamsted short of their target.
There were some good performances throughout the day, particularly the bowling of the youngsters on a road of a pitch. But in truth it was a game that we should have won.
NOTE: Scores don't quite add up... more scoring training required!
