Hertingfordbury v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 26 Jul 2014 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
After 3 wins in a row confidence was high as we travelled to the picturesque ground of Hertingfordbury. A quant little village stuck amongst the rolling hills near Hertford. Some would say a traditional village club with us arriving before the majority of the opposition.
Once again a sunny and hot week was supplemented by rain on Friday to produce a slightly soft wicket. The captain was glad to lose the toss, basically as he had no idea what to do, and was not too disappointed to be stuck into the field. Josh opened up and wasn't quite his normal self but it was only after fines that we discovered that he had taken to the Joycey school of match preparation and was hanging out of his proverbial bottom. Chad was in a feisty mode but was getting nothing out of the pitch. He decided to take his frustration out on the opener especially after some of us thought we had him caught behind.
With nothing happening for the seamers on what was turning out to be a very slow and low wicket, it was time for the spin twins. Dighty in his 4th game for the 1s had immediate success and finally opened his account for the season. After a couple of lusty blows, their number 3 became frustrated after we blocked his favourite shot and put up a chance for the skipper. The captain rolling back the years and moving like a springbok snaffled up the chance to take a quite brilliant low driving catch. The opposition's dangerous looking number 4 came out and stroked the ball well through the "V" but was undone by one that kept low.
At drinks with the score at 120/3 the captain highlighted the need to keep things tight and not let the opposition get away from us. For once his little team talk actually worked. After that point wickets started to tumble. Some tight bowling and immaculate fielding (Chad took 3 outrageous catches although everyone agreed not as good as the captains) saw the opposition melt like a Rich Tea biscuit in a piping hot mug of coffee. The last 7 wickets fell for 16 runs. In the end the spinners had bamboozled the Hertingfordbury batsman with Dighty taking 3 and Riaz 6 wickets.
Tea was one of the best I have ever had over my illustrious career. Sandwiches, pork pies, picnic eggs, fruit skewers, homemade chocolate brownies, lemon drizzle cake to name just a few of the items on offer.
Joycey and Gareth opened up and there was a little panic after Gareth went quickly to a fine catch at short leg followed swiftly by Luke to a dubious LBW. However Doug and Joycey forged the decisive partnership. Joycey was batting as fluently as I've seen him all season and prompted the captain to remark at how well he could bat with a good night sleep. Unfortunately someone had to correct the skipper as he had only had 3 hours sleep. Given that was a couple hours more than the previous weekend I suppose everything is relative.
It would have been nice for the pair to have seen us home after doing all the donkey work but alas the Berko way is to always put a little bit of extra pressure on the waiting batsman. No problem for nerves of steel Wyatt Earp who again hit the winning runs with a 4. The win was comfortable but it would have been nice not to have gifted unnecessary points to the opposition.
Riaz takes home Man of the match for his 6 for. 4 wins in a row. If Barclays sponsored our league I'm sure we would win team of the month.
