Rickmansworth v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 05 Jul 2014 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won By 5 wickets
Match report
When things aren't going your way, you haven't won all season and confidence is low the last thing a side needs is an away trip to the top of the league. But on Saturday that was the particular mountain we faced.
For the first time this season the skipper had strong availabilities and had to make some tough decisions on who would drop down to the 2s. In his pre-match speech he used this as motivation to remind players that no-one was safe now and we needed to start performing. It seemed to strike a chord as the players were pretty pumped up to get out their a slay the metaphorical dragon of Rickmansworth. However first the captain needed to remove some form of excrement from the outfield. Luckily Guy had a shovel in the back of his mini bus. Not sure what was more random, Guy driving an empty school mini bus or that it had a spade in it.
Chad opened the bowling against Rickmansworth and it was clear his pace was going to cause a problem for the batsman but it was Josh that struck first by bouncing out their opener. He swiftly followed this up by dismissing their other opener caught behind. The skipper was starting to get a bit worried that Chad hadn't opened his account for Berkhamsted but that was all to change when he had the dangerous looking number 3 snagged in the gully. His second wicket came quickly after with one that nipped back to bowl the batsman shouldering arms.
For the first time this season we had skittle a top order out by the time our openers came off. Hulk (Doug not the Brazilian striker) then came on from the pavilion end and in tandem with Dighty dried the runs up like a sponge. When Doug finally took the handbrake off he got his reward and took 4 wickets. He needed to as he would have got a bigger fine for bottling first sip when Chad was bowling. After this Chad came back and clean up the tail in efficient manner. 3 balls. 2 wickets. We were chasing 79.
So we had 20 overs to go before tea so the captain made the point not to give the opposition a sniff and to bat properly, take our time and lay the foundations for our run chase. With just over 1 run an over needed surely that wasn't too much to ask. When the skipper walked out to bat at 39 for 5 clearly it was. Either that or no one had heard his team talk. Luckily a Christening was in full swing in the clubhouse and the delicate sounds of Robin Thicke and Rudamental was drowning out the captain's choice words of description for the Berko batsman shot selections. If the music wasn't annoying the captain, the queue for the ice cream van directly behind the bowlers arm was particularly irritating but first slip claiming the skipper was the start of the tail was infuriating. He continued to chirp claiming that my only shot was through third man. It was particular pleasing to delicately place the next ball between him and second slip for runs. It was also very pleasurable to despatch him for numerous boundaries (not through third man I might add) when he bowled to record Berko's first win of the season.
It was a great performance especially from the bowlers and great to get a win under our belts. Hopefully that is the catalyst to turn our season round. To be fair to the opposition it was a good natured game with some light hearted banter which made the day enjoyable. It was also great to get back to the club to hear all teams had won on Saturday. This set up a fantastic night out which ended in a night club in St. Albans. I would like to be able to describe some of the evening but unfortunately my memory of events is somewhat sketchy to which I blame Ed.
