Broxbourne II v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 21 Jun 2014 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost By 7 wickets
Match report
It was a glorious Saturday afternoon as Berko made the long trip east to Broxbourne. A lovely ground awaited us and on what looked like a batting paradise the captain had no hesitation but to bat after winning the toss.
As Berko stood at 25/5 after 10 overs it would seem that the captains assessment of the pitch was very wide of the mark. Either that or our batsman had played particularly poorly even by our standards this year. Anyway I will let the readers judge for themselves.
Gareth left a straight one and was unsurprisingly bowled. Ed flashed at a wide one and was caught in the slips. Luke was done by a slower bowl cleverly disguised by the bowler coming in off a very shortened run up. Jez having been told their Sri Lankan bowler was moving the bowl in to him, left a ball that was shaping in and was again unsurprisingly bowled. Lee meanwhile came in and flashed at a wide one and was caught at point.
The captain was admiring the shots and non-shots from the other end and to say he was a little disappointed would be an understatement. In any case our latest addition to the Berko 1st team was making his way to the crease. Could Chad dig Berko out of a very deep hole. From the very first ball that he timed the pants off, the team hoped he could. The skipper and Chad put on a usual partnership with Chad very much the aggressors while the captain played watchfully. Unfortunately the captain got a ball that lifted on him and was superbly caught at mid on. After that it was time for another collapse. Jamie nicked one to their keeper, Riaz played around a straight one and was out LBW while Josh learning from his coach was gone the same way. LBW. Again.
Chad continued playing his shots to try and get Berko to some form of respectability and the highlight was three consecutive sixes, each bigger than the last. In the end his resistance ended and he was done but their left underarm spinner. Chad really impressed on his debut innings scoring 78 out of 118. The rest of us scored just 40 between us.....
But we weren't to worry with the pitch doing "all sorts" surely we would bowl them out cheaply. What was strange though was the break in innings had turned the pitch from a minefield to an absolute road with cats eyes on. Had they called for the heavy roller in between innings or had the captain been correct in his early assessment?
Without going into too much detail, even Chad couldn't get much to happen on an unresponsive pitch. The only highlight of our bowling was Ed taking a good catch in the gully without him or the bowler realising it was a wicket.
So another poor day from Berkhamsted with minimal bonus point gained from a heavy defeat. Man of the match goes to Chad who batted brilliantly and probably deserved the bubbles more than their Sri Lankan. If only the rest of us could bat with him.
Much to do.
