Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI v Southgate Compton on Sat 14 Jun 2014 at 1pm

Match report
I don't think I have ever played against a nicer team than our opponents. It was an absolute delight to play against them on what turned out to be a glorious Saturday afternoon. What a way to spend a Saturday, I do hope when the league splits next year we get two fixtures against them.
Anyway after thunderstorms overnight and a short downpour in the morning the pitch actually didn't look too bad but the skipper still inserted the opposition. Not sure they were particularly prepared for the game given we had to wait 5 minutes for one of the openers to arrive at the crease. Rob making his 1st XI debut opened up and produced a pre-planned 4 card trick of wide, wide, wide, wicket and their batsman had spent less time at the cease than he did getting to it. Josh then snagged their captain well caught in the covers.
Their other opener was slowly accumulating runs as we feed him numerous short balls on what was a slow wicket but thanks to good work from Jez and an appalling call from his team mate, Grayson was run out. Their number 4 nicked off early in his innings but was unfortunately dropped. He then went on to make a painful 50.
The skipper then turned to himself to bowl. Having instructed the rest of the bowlers not to bowl short he preceded to keep his length full. Very full. So much so he bowled numerous high full tosses. Now it's hard to fathom how his right arm slow could constitute dangerous bowling but nonetheless he was warned by the umpire and then forced to come off. Deep down he probably felt relieved. While this was going on we had a change of keepers due to Jez's displeasure of using Gareth's "childlike" gloves once the webbing on his own pair had gone (looks like Mr and Mrs O'Neill will be forking out for more kit). But it seems he is a better short leg than keeper taking two good catches off Riaz.
In the end their lower order pushed the score onto 196. A couple of drop catches and missed run outs and the score could have been a lot different. At tea the opposition continued their polite nature by sitting on both their table and ours. No doubt to socialise in 4 letter expletives.
Then Ball-Gate happened. After a change to the rules over the winter, teams must take the new ball at the start of the innings. With the opposition trying to take the old ball our skipper politely pointed out the aforementioned rule change. Unfortunately their captain, umpire and random spectator didn't trust our skipper, justifiably so given his untrustworthy face and long history of devious lies, and he had to produce the league handbook as evidence. Obviously they were very apologetic after the handbook proved our skipper correct.
Lee got the innings off to a fast start as usual before playing all round a straight one. Gareth and the captain played well and were ticking the score board over nicely. The opposition had a few polite things to say whenever anyone played and missed and well within their rights to appeal for catches behind when the batsman had clearly missed the ball by a least a foot. Once Gareth had departed, Luke and the captain put on a good partnership and with Berko needing 90 off the last 20 overs with 8 wickets in hand, the win was on. Unfortunately both batsman threw their wickets away when well set and after a flurry of wickets from the middle order we had to play out for a draw needing 20 off the last over. I must admit one of their players, I forget which but I don't recall him scoring any runs or bowling, almost ruined the good natured spirit of the game by abusing Jez and his yellow cricket spikes.
In the end it was disappointing not to win when we were well set at times. Hard to name a man of the match as no-one really took hold of the game but Rob certainly impressed on his 1st XI debut.
