Match report
It was a busy week for the captain. Month end client reports needed writing, research reports needed analysing and a meeting with a company needed preparing for. Obviously none of this was done as I was running around finding enough players for a Friday and Saturday game of cricket.
The rebranded Gazette Cup, now known as the catchy Heath Park cup, was where our attentions turned to on a glorious Friday evening. Whether it was the sun or the prospect of no work the following day, there was a large crowd in attendance at our hosts Boxmoor. A few of them were partaking in a full 11 aside pre-game football match on the outfield while others contemplated their upcoming GCSEs with a bottle of Johnnie Walkers finest to sooth the stresses of teenage life. Some might say this was normal park life in Hemel, I like to think they were there for some T20 action.
The skipper went out and once more lost the toss. On a hard looking deck the oppo chose the bat. Josh opened the bowling and looked dangerous from the outset showing good pace that both "young" batsman struggled with. Luke "good wheels" Wheeler opened from the other end but struggled to find his best form and the wicket. The opposition's little opener surprised everyone when he started connecting with the ball and sent it flying to all parts. Unfortunately his luck ran out when he smashed the ball to the skipper at mid-on. However the opposition had still got off to a good start and we needed to stem the flow of runs. The skipper turned to the off-spin of James and he was immediately rewarded when a top edge was well taken again by the captain. It was nice for both James and Jez to leave the catch for the captain who ran in from mid-wicket to take the chance in the middle of the pitch.
James bowled well in tandem with Andy and after the opposition's good start we did well to peg them back and restrict them to 130 on a quick scoring ground.
Returning T20 specialist Lee opened up with young Jonny and got the innings off to a quick start, punishing any wayward bowling. Of which there was plenty. We were well ahead of the run rate but two quick wickets saw both openers depart. Jez came in, hit a 6, then got bowled playing the "Dilshan." It was left to Doug and James to build a partnership and push the Berko truckers towards victory. Doug was batting well and finding things easy. So easy in fact that he thought he'd keep the oppo in the game by running out James. Then the captain. Then Larry.
Just like the previous Saturday we were making things difficult for ourselves from a strong position. Rob was given out stumped by their umpire in a miraculous feat of vision given he was looking at the ground while Andy top edged one to cover. Meanwhile Doug was staying calm and pushed the score to an inch of victory before Luke held his nerve to hit the winning runs with 2 overs to spare.
So in a competition that saw us reach the semi-final last year it was good to start with a win. We must stop making run chases so difficult for ourselves though as one of these days we won't scrape through.
Man of the match goes to Doug for a fine knock of 64 despite his bout of sabotage.
