Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 2wickets

Match report Berkhamsted U15 B v Bushey Monday 8th July 2013.

And so 8 games later and after some chastening performances our season and the time together came to an end.
On a beautiful evening we all eventually arrived at Bushey and Will G went off to toss up. We won the toss, elected to field first and went forth. Josh bustled in and bowled quickly albeit a little wayward and the score ticked over. Harry continued to bowl straight and full and had two very tidy overs. George Lewarne made a special appearance from the A team and bowled as you would expect. His two wickets for 8 runs off three overs provided good pressure and helped the cause. Star player was young Hugh Phillipson who bowled 2.3 overs and finished with 2 wickets for 7 runs and he was helped by Amish and Will G who kept it very tight.

For the record, the ground fielding was utterly clueless with the ball going through legs, under hands and generally being very elusive but despite those shambolic moments, Bushey eventually got to 68 all out.
I said to the boys that they would never have a better chance to win the game as the opening bowler had a poorly ankle and the rest of the players were from a variety of age groups.
Off we went. Adam and Bickers strode out to bat and with the damaged opener spraying the ball about we had 8 off the first over. And then.....Adam gave them fielding practice, Bickers got bowled, Matt P likewise, Josh lobbed one to extra cover and George got bowled off his pads. 37 for 5 wickets off 8 overs. The coach started to sweat as another potential victory was in danger. Amish, Hugh and Will G all steadied the ship but having marched off to tell Hugh to play calmly and sensibly, Captain Goodwyn then lashed out and was bowled all ends up trying to hit the ball into the next county. Needless to say, I was not impressed. The young leg spinner who did all this damage was excellent and finished with three overs, one wicket for one run. A good player!
And so, at the end of the 15th over, scores were tied and we had Jonny and Rob at the crease. It would be fair to say that neither had been in great form all season. Total runs scored, 9 between them, all season but to be fair to them they stood their ground and when the opener bowled a wide we were home. Cue glorious celebrations and small pitch invasion. It proved a great way to finish our season and a mighty fine birthday present.
Having finished the match report, may I now indulge myself in a few words?
Firstly as you are all well aware I passed into a new decade on Monday and I thank you all for you kind words and vouchers for the Gatsby. You are all very kind and I very much appreciate your generosity.
Over the past 7 years, I have got to know the boys well and take great delight from watching them grow up and continue to play cricket. I have never really focussed on the tuition of the technique as they can learn that from others better qualified but I hope my love of the game has been taken on board by them and will hold them in good stead for the future. They are a great bunch of lads and you can all be very proud of the way that this year they have ignored the heavy defeats and stuck to the job of playing the game, trying to win and doing so with a spirit that should be commended. I am particularly delighted that a lot of the lads have got into adult cricket and seem to be holding their own. I have had many members of the club come to me talking about how impressed they have been with the various performances and where I have played in the same team they have all done well.

Finally a few thanks offered to the support team. As parents, you have fetched, carried, responded promptly to emails, rarely let me down with last minute cancellations and generally helped score and collect boundary flags. To the boys themselves, thanks in all areas for your support. Don’t stop playing when beer, girls and work (in that order) try and lure you away. My long suffering family must also be thanked but Mark Lewarne deserves special mention in the end of season valediction. I don’t know a man more devoted to junior cricket and my role in the club would not exist without his organisation and endeavour. When you are next sitting on the boundary watching your son play, buy him a beer as he is the source of all that we enjoy.
Thanks all, it has been absolutely brilliant and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
