Tring Park v Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 13A on Mon 29 Apr 2013 at 545pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost BCC lost by 12 runs
Match report
After a thoroughly enjoyable game against Chesham (helped no doubt by their last ball win), the boys were in good spirits for what has become the customary league opener against Tring.
Berkhamsted won the toss and opted to bowl first hoping to keep the usually fluid Tring attack under control and so it was. Some very tidy bowling by Jack and Benjie restricted the Tring openers to a mere 4 an over and although we struggled to take wickets (a couple of easy catches going down), there was some excellent line and length which continued with Tomas and Toby. As such we were confident a big Tring total was unlikely. However the wickets of Will Darraugh and Michael Fryer (who between them had amassed 56 runs but over 13 overs) brought in the heavy hitters and with wickets in hand, Tring opened their shoulders and began to find the boundaries, punishing anything off line or length. That said, there was a good debut with the ball from Hugh Phillipson who looked sharp at times and it was good to see Josh getting a bit of turn at the other end. However a missed run out and an expensive over-throw cost us more runs and from looking like Tring would struggle to make into the 90s, they did in fact squeeze over the 100 to set us 102 to win.
So not by any stretch unobtainable and it was a delight to see all the top order get into the runs. Uncharacteristically (and I may say “hurrah”) the Berkhamsted openers were in no hurry to leather the ball and so Christian and Tomas built a solid, patient partnership of 41 before Christian misjudged a full toss when just 4 short of retirement. Charlie (26) and Tomas (20) then carried on where Christian had left off and began to work the field nicely, picking off the bad balls as required but keeping the scoreboard ticking along with easy singles. With 30 to go and needing a run a ball, the boys looked comfortable until Tomas’ and Charlie’s dismissals brought about a mid-order collapse. In the end, we fell short by 12 runs so although a disappointing result, there was much to be positive about as we look forward to hosting Dunstable next week.
