London Colney II v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 11 May 2013 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket
Match report
On a day of slate grey skies, bitter winds and occasional showers we clung onto a one wicket victory after seemingly coasting to victory.
Pre-match chat was all about layers, namely how many. Skipper Ian reprimanded colts for lack of sweaters so Harvey went out wearing Simsy's 1978 school jumper, apparantly untouched by the passing of time. That's when white was creamy brown. Having won the toss Ian decided to make us run around in the field to keep warm but after the openers put on 50 off the first 10 we should have brought on deckchairs as we watched the opposition treat Dighty's immaculate line and length with the ultimate respect. 10 of Steve's first 12 overs were maidens, the other 2 shedding a frankly disgraceful 5 runs. At the other end the seamers were extracting nothing from a very flat pitch although Ian came onto bowl out the opener who had ground out a turgid 45.
With the scorebook creeping along we began to take wickets including a really smart run out by Gareth and a good low catch by Harvey and in the end we were a little disappointed not to bowl out the opposition, a couple of catches going down as our hands turned blue. Still, a target of 160 was gettable so we went in for a splendid tea to get the circulation working again.
Our batting response was excellent, Gareth, Mikey and Luke all played some great shots and looked well set for 50's before inexplicably getting out. This brought on a bit of a collapse and we were indebted to Ted on his adult debut who decided to finish the game with a flourish until he too went for one too many heaves and got bowled. With the scores tied, our last man strode to the crease and Simsy bided his time before smashing a full bunger through midwicket for the winning runs. We had been fortunate to miss the really heavy rain which hit the ground just after we drove away with the spoils.
2 wins out of 2 and a hopefully warmer home game next weekend.
