Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI v Bushey on Sat 03 Aug 2013 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost By 4 wickets
Match report
It was a strange day, no doubt the planets must have been aligned as we found ourselves playing at home for once. With recent performances going against us we faced the daunting task of Bushey who topped the Div 4 herts league. However with a strong team and beating them last year confidence was high we could repeat that success this year.
The skipper was pleasantly surprised that the majority of the team had turned up early and champing at the bit to get on with the pre-match warm up game of footie. This week it was won by the whites. It could have been so much different if Jonny hadn't "Waddled" a glorious chance in front of goal ably set up by the skippers probing through ball. The game also got a bit competitive towards the end when Jamie tried to shoulder barge Seb. Unfortunately for Jamie the age difference between the two is inversely proportionate to the weight difference hence he came off worse.
The skipper went out and lost the toss but wasn't too disappointed to be inserted on what looked a good firm pitch. Jonny and Joycey opened up and soon Jonny was back in the pavilion having suffered the ultimate embarrassment for an opener of getting run out without facing a ball. This bought Jez together with his old school mucker. And they must have enjoyed each other’s company out in the middle as they looked ever so assured. Joycey played will real fluency that has been missing the last few weeks (not sure if there is a direct correlation between his level of hang over and his ability to bat but let's just say he had a quiet Friday night) while Jez continued in his attacking manner set from last week. The pair put on only our 2nd hundred run partnership of the season in good time against the Bushey seamers. Things were going well and we had our sights on a big total.
Unfortunately as always with a Berkhamsted innings we were getting ahead of ourselves. After the club Chairman took a picture of the scoreboard it seemed to jinx us. That and the fact the opposition brought on two spinners. Nelson struck for the third time this season and Jez was unfortunately caught by the bowler taking evasive action. This seemed to take the momentum away from us and a middle order collapse followed. Jamie and the skipper did a bit of rebuilding towards the end and with the help of the tail we posted a total of 185. From the position we were in it was below par. Joycey batting brilliantly for his 60 but lost concentration when arguably we needed him to go on post losing Jez. To be fair to the Bushey spinners they did bowl well. Although the off spinners doosra looked suspiciously like an away swinger to the skipper when he got out there.
A substantial tea awaited us thanks to Ramadan and after filling up on sandwiches, sausage rolls (a well greeted new addition to the Berko spread) and a cheese board we took the field knowing we still had a competitive total we could defend.
Now even he would admit being a bit below par with the ball so far this season but Saturday we saw some of the old Seb return. He bowled a brilliant spell of genuine pace and picked up 3 wickets. Unfortunately despite being built like the proverbial brick house he is still only limited to 7 over spells. Shame as I was forced to take him off. At the other end we weren't having much luck with first Luke going for 12 an over and then the skipper for 8 an over. Essentially the opposition got off to a flyer with much of the destruction caused by Mr Sharma.
The skipper then turned to Bruce Banner aka Doug, who calmly bowled a good line and length to peg the run rate back. After chatting up the umpire he got an LBW decision but then his in ability to trouble the always assured looking Sharma meant the green mist was slowly descending. For the first time in his innings Sharma played and missed which proved too much for Bruce to handle and his alto ego the Incredible Hulk took over to curse the batsman his luck in 4 letter expletives. It was a bit harsh given the guy was on 70 at the time. The outburst seemed to spur the batsman on and despite us picking up two more wickets the opposition cruised to victory. We showed great fight in the field but in the end Sharma was too good for us. It was a great knock but one wonders what he is doing in Div 4 herts cricket.
Another Saturday and another loss. But we picked up 14 points against the league leaders so we shouldn't be too disappointed. Man of the match goes to Joycey who rose to the challenge after a poor performance the week before.
