West Herts II v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 27 Jul 2013 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost By 5 wickets
Match report
Another week, another away trip and another Joycey induced delay. This time we had to stop for petrol. After painfully crawling along the bypass at 40mph so not to lose him we finally got his car and stomach filled up courtesy of James who took sympathy on the job shy with £10 petrol money and Esso's finest Chicken and Bacon sandwich. At least he wasn't wearing the previous night’s clubbing gear. Oh wait. He was.
While all this was going on the rest of the team were once again changed and waiting to start the warm up. The skipper had no hesitation choosing to bat on what looked like a road. Once again Lee opened up in his cautious way, spanking the opening bowlers around. Joycey at the other end meanwhile was making batting look difficult as if he'd been to a Shordich night club all night. Which obviously he had.
A change in bowling brought three quick wickets and suddenly our solid start was once again pegged back. The skipper and Jez did a bit of rebuilding and took the score onto 110/3 before complacency set in and another 3 quick wickets changed our good position to a mediocre one. Once again we were guilty of not converting scores. However the skipper remained calm as the team generally batted down to 10 and with Riaz in good form with the bat there was confidence he could lead the tail to a promising total. And that he did. Ably assisted by first Jamie and then Ethan. Riaz started patiently before battering the ball into submission. Literally as it had fallen apart. The change of ball had no impact and Riaz continued his assault in the final overs to hit a number of sixes one of which hit the clubhouse's Perspex windows (they must of heard he was coming).
203 was the target set. After the collapse in the middle it was good to get full batting points although we would have to bowl well. And we did to begin with. Both Will and Josh bowled with genuine pace at the start and were unlucky not to pick up more wickets from the opposition batsman attempting shots from square leg. Their opener who had looked very uncomfortable early on somehow managed to stay at the crease while we were having success at the other end. They were 5 downs at drinks needing 73 off the last 13 overs. 3 from 3 overs changed the maths to 7 an over. Surely they couldn't do it? Unfortunately that's when the wheels fell off. Us not them. Drop catches, missed run out chances and miss fields all cost us and they cruised to victory with 2 overs to spare. Frustrating but we need to take our chances. Their opener who got 80 not out could have been out 4 times. Funny how the opposition are never as generous to us.
Man of the match goes to Riaz who scored a great knock of 62. He might find himself up the order next week.
