Match report
It was an interesting start to proceedings. Following on from last week’s memory drain of forgetting to wear his box, Joycey turned up to this week’s game without his wallet. Left in the Crown public house raised some suspicion of the previous night’s antics but given he was still wearing last night’s attire verified that he probably wasn't fully tuned into radio World (when is he ever one might say). Final confirmation came when Joycey managed to follow the wrong BMW on the bypass in a two car convoy and ended up in Hemel. The rest of the team were already in St Albans at this point. Nevertheless we continued with our warm up sans three bodies (Charlie and Ollie's kit bag were with Joycey in Hemel).
The captain won the toss and inserted the opposition. With a strong batting line up he was confident we could chase down a score.
Bowling at the start was a bit wayward and there were certainly enough four balls to help the opposition to 84 without loss. We also didn't help ourselves by dropping Moody twice early in his innings. In fact we dropped 6 catches in total which is by far our worst fielding display of the season.
A change of bowling brought about a wicket and Lee and Riaz bowled well in tandem. However we were still struggling for wickets. With St Albans still having plenty of batting left they accelerated to score 100 runs in the last 16 overs to set a daunting 244. With a quick scoring outfield there was still a chance we could get the runs.
In reply, Lee opened the innings with Joycey to add extra impetus the run chase. Riaz thought it a risk but the captain was vindicated when Lee hit the second over for 13. To be fair to Lee after the first boundary he did verbally warn the bowler not to bowl short to him. He didn't listen and Lee tucked in. A change of bowler didn't help and Lee smoked the new man for 20 off his first over. A third change of bowling and an incredibly defensive field stemmed the flow of runs for a while however the opening pair had put on 60 in the space of 9 overs. Once Lee was out followed quickly by Ollie the run rate started to really slow and our good work at the start was pegged back with us only reaching 100 in the 25th over.
So far this season we have been guilty of getting starts but not converting into proper scores. Only 3 fifties have been scored in 11 matches. At the same point last season we had 10 in 9 games. Saturday was no different. Lee, Joycey, Jez and myself were all guilty of this. If one of us had gone on the result would probably have been different. Either that or had we not dropped their opener. Twice.
With us chasing the game the opposition stuck on the slow spinners on a slow pitch making it difficult to find boundaries especially with men out. In the end we gave it a go but came up 45 runs short.
We have now lost 4 of the last 5 games and we are in threat of being dragged into a relegation battle. We must get back to winning ways and that starts on Saturday. I keep saying we are man for man better than any team in this league but I'll be brutally honest at this point, that statement looks well off the mark in our recent performances. We. Must. Start. Performing.
Man of the match goes to Riaz who bowled well to take 6 wickets.
