Rickmansworth v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 13 Jul 2013 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost By 4 wickets
Match report
Scorchio. It was a hot one again as the 1st made the short (relative verses our previous away days in Hertford and beyond) trip to Rickmansworth. After a £25k grant from the ECB the oppo had repaired their hollowed turf destroyed by badgers in the offseason. The pitch looked firm and hard and the outfield quick. The skipper had no problems deciding to bat given the plethora of bowling options at his disposal and confidence was high we could bowl them out.
The skipper and Joycey took to the field prepared and ready to take on Ricky. Well actually only one of us was ready. Joycey had forgotten one important piece of equipment. His box. After fending off three balls from his nether region it was time to run off and get properly protected. Meanwhile the chat from the oppo reminded the skipper of his time playing cricket down under. Not just because of the obnoxious sledging before anyone had faced a ball but more the accents. Although the keeper was a Kiwi, 1st slip, 2nd slip and gully were all Aussies (or ringer 1,2 and 3 as I like to call them). In fact even the bowler was an Aussie - at least he has been registered as an overseas player. Must be a "Walkabout" in Rickmansworth these days.
Anyway back to the cricket. In his new role as opener the skipper once again looked assured for all of one ball before looping a long hop to point. Joycey and Jez batted well together punishing any poor bowling. They put on a good partnership until Jez top edged a (very) short ball and Joycey tapped a full toss straight back to the bowler (third match in a row). Three bad balls, three wickets. Although runs weren't hard to come by wickets were falling steadily. James took a leaf out of the skipper's book by trying to smash the first ball of a new bowler only to feather a catch behind. After his recent stay at one of Her Majesty's prisons, Seb took the role of Stuart Broad and preceded to stand his ground after smashing one to the keeper.
Riaz meanwhile was batting a sensible knock with the tail. Latching onto any width outside off stump to despatch to the boundary. Good to see him get his maiden 50 for the club and got us to a total of 179. Probably a bit short of what the skipper wanted at the start of the day but with us bowling well in previous matches a win was still on the cards.
If only it was that simple. Antipodean number 1 came out to open and preceded to hit it to all parts. Both good and bad balls. And there were quite a few of the latter. However Josh did him with his slower ball and we all said goodbye to Bruce. Out walked antipodean number 2, a portly chap who continued from where his mate left off. Trying to hit every ball out of the park. One could say Shane was a bit lucky with his batting and another day may have seen one of his miss hits going to one of our fielders.
Meanwhile at the other end we were steadily getting wickets. Ed bowled well on his 1st XI debut and picked up 2 wickets. Despite the scoring rate remaining high we thought if we could snag antipodean 2 we were in with a chance. Antipodean 3 came and went but Antipodean 4 was just one too many Ausssies for us to handle and he and Shane saw the opposition home.
A disappointing day with the Aussie's winning back some pride for Australia after the Rugby and 1st Ashes Test.
