Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI v London Colney on Sat 11 May 2013 at 1pm
Match was Abandoned Heavy Rain & Hail
Match report
Following on from last week, the Berko truckers went into this match high on confidence that they could continue their winning start to the season. With the oldies losing out to the youngsters in the pre-match footie game the previous weekend, the coach changed tactics and switched our customary warm up to touch rugby. The emphasis being "touch" as opposed to "full contact" given it was only a warm up. However no-one told Jez. Either that or he took it on himself to help the captain with his bad back with a tackle that resembled Brian "The Chiropractor" Lima. Luckily sky sports cameras were there to capture the incident for the viewing pleasure of the readers:

After the captain had patched himself up in a scene reminiscent to the Somme he limped out to the decking to toss up. He duly won and had no problems inserting the opposition on a pitch that was slightly soft on top.
On a very cold day Berkhamsted started the match well. With O'Dair and Shah bowling tight lines, the opposition found it hard to get the ball away. Luke struck first snagging the opener caught behind. The trusty Steed then came on to yoke their number three and bag a second, well caught by Wyatt Earp in the gully. Meanwhile Shah, fresh from his 12 hour night shift and 3 hour sleep, was toiling away at the other end with no luck. He bowled a fantastic spell that challenged Leon for the "most consecutive overs in a match award" and strangled the opposition of runs. We were delighted when his hard work paid off and he got his well-deserved debut wicket for the 1st team. Admittedly a stumping for a medium pacer is not great for the ego but he didn't care.
After not bowling for more than a year, Sam came on and surprised everyone (including himself) with some good overs. He also claimed a wicket when the opposition's number 6 launched the ball into orbit only for the captain to pull off one of the best catches the writer has seen in a long time. Even more impressive given his pre-match ruptured spleen.
Unfortunately from that point onwards we let the opposition off the hook as our bowling at the death wasn't good enough and London Colney managed the get to 185 with some rather agricultural shots from their number 8. Over tea comments moved to the number of Leicester City fans in the 1st team and to save their blushes after Sunday's result to Watford I won't mention their names here.
We made a solid reply reaching 47/2 before apocalyptic rain saw an early bath and a shared 10 points. Although the match was abandoned Shah still gets my man of the match for his 17 overs costing less than 2 runs an over.
All that was left was to drink a few beers, watch the FA cup final and come up with worthy nicknames for the coach. Suggestions on the back of a stamp addressed envelope.
