Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI v Little Gaddesden on Mon 25 Jun 2012 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 84 runs

Match report At last the sun was shining and the eagerly anticipated Quarter Final of the Gazette cup against local village side, Little Gad could finally go ahead after two previous postponements.

With a strong Berkhamsted side, spirits were high that we could continue our success in the T20 cup competition. The home side won the toss and the skipper elected to bat with one of this year’s overseas signings, Lewis and T20 specialist Rajib, a late signing during the tournament auction, opening the batting. Both took the attack to the Little Gad bowlers with Hamish playing some especially nice drives through the covers. A misjudged second run from Rajib and Berkhamsted lost their first wicket but this paved the way for Angus “The Aggressor” Schaw. Keen to prove the multimillion kiwi dollar auction price and secure lucrative sponsorship deals, Gus entertained the crowd and hit his way to 25 off of only 15 balls. One swipe too many and a top edge saw the end of New Zealand’s next (but much thinner) Jessie Ryder.

Meanwhile, Hamish continued to get on with his work quietly and accumulated 39 at a strike rate of 122 before he was also caught. A small mid-order collapse and the good start began to unravel. However following on from the previous rounds exploits, Sir Douglas calmed fears and despite some DIY to his flashing blade, bludgeoned the opposition’s bowling for 1s and 2s. He and first round star, Will “Trusty” Steed, saw the home side to a good score of 150.

Jack of all trades, Lewis opened the bowling for the home side with a fantastic spell only conceding 6 runs from his 4 overs. At the other end Joe bowled well despite struggling with his line against the left hander and when the skipper changed the opening bowlers the opposition were significantly behind the run rate.

It was pretty much plain sailing after that, much to the annoyance of the baying crowd that had come from miles around to see a thriller. Gus and James finished the job with 4 and 3 wickets respectively and Berkhamsted were left to celebrate reaching the semi finals.

Plaudits goes to Hamish Lewis who took home the “Lots of Rice” sponsored Man-of-the-Match award (Sweet and sour chicken balls with egg fried rice) but no doubt we will face tougher opposition in the next round. Bring it on.
