Berkhamsted Cricket Club U14 A v Tring park on Tue 22 May 2012 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Berkhamsted came out on top against early league leaders Tring in a typically feisty local derby between two very evenly matched teams.
Tring batted first after winning the toss but despite negotiating the first couple of overs fairly comfortably, lost both openers - McCormack (1) and Partner (8) - in the space of three balls from Harry Ormerod, who bowled accurately and with pace on a very flat wicket.
Gurnett (13) came to the crease and scored quickly with some aggressive hitting but he mistimed a drive and was caught at cover off the bowling of Peck. Having barely seen any of the strike, Wager-Leigh (2) was unlucky to play on to Holdroyd when looking to force runs on the leg side, and when the big hitting Murphy (2) was run out by Peacock and Slater, Tring were in real trouble at 37-5. But the innings was rescued by a fine unbeaten stand between Darraugh and Hogan who patiently built a 50 partnership, giving their team a fighting chance of a win.
Chasing 92 Berko began cautiously against the fiery attack of Gurnett and Murphy. With Tring after early wickets, there was plenty of good natured banter flowing as they ramped up the pressure on the opening pair of Lewis and Parry. Despite a few near misses, they survived the opening barrage but had scored just 22 off 8 overs and the game was finely poised. Then after a change in bowling, Berko went on the attack and despite losing Parry to a sloppy run out, the momentum soon swung back the home team's way with Lewis and Lewarne upping the run rate, but with Partner bowling well the match was not yet won.
At the other end McCormack, after a couple of expensive overs, got his revenge when Lewis (38) was caught brilliantly by Partner who somehow held on to a ball travelling like a rocket towards the boundary. Partner then picked up the wicket of Stanford caught by Hogan, but despite a wobble, it came too late to affect the outcome, with Lewarne (31 no) and Holdroyd (9 no) knocking off the remaining runs with a couple of overs to spare.
