Potton Town v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 21 Jul 2012 at 1.00pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 38 runs

Match report After 2 frustrating weeks of continuous rain and cancelled fixtures the sun finally came out and we made the very long trip up to the town of Potton. Some interesting facts about Potton include its parish church dates back to the 13th century, the “Great Fire of Potton” in 1783 destroyed a large part of the town and it is 10 miles from Bedford. That’s Bedford in Bedfordshie. Some may wonder how they ended up in Hertfordshire League division 4.

After the long drive, a very wet, soft, sticky wicket presented itself to us. That combined with incredibly short boundaries square of the wicket (so short they were only just off the square) due to the soggy outfield, the prospects of a good game of cricket were looking limited. The skipper won the toss and could only make one decision and that was to insert the opposition.

Joycey and Hamish opened the bowling and unusually for this season we keep the run rate low. Both combined well to bag two early wickets – caught Lewis bowled Joyce. Berkhamsted maintained the pressure with Romit coming on in place of Hamish and immediately tiring one end up. Huw then came on to bowl and burgled 3 wickets in a spell that consisted of long hops, full tosses and the occasional double bouncer. In fairness there were a few good balls thrown in as well but these didn’t get the wickets.

In the end we restricted the opposition to 163 which was probably more than we should have but their captain batted well and took advantage of the short boundaries. In any case despite a tricky wicket we were confident of chasing the score down.

After the loss of Gareth early, Jez and Hamish built a solid start with a good partnership made even more impressive that Jez, unbeknown to any of us, had a broken finger. We were cursing it at 70/1 when a flurry of wickets left us 80/5. Suddenly the opposition had the wind in there sails and despite new boy Jamie and Larrry trying to stem the flow of wickets and rebuilding the innings we limped tamely to 125 all out.

It was a disappointing end. After the long travel up there and showing much improvement in the field we gave it away with our batting. Despite Hawlett bowling well for the opposition he shouldn’t have picked up 7 wickets (5 of which were bowled). Must work on our defensive and in fact playing a shot at all (see captain for story).
